Senate sneaks a death penalty bill through 6/20/07

NEW YORKERS AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY

**TAKE ACTION!
If you were frustrated to hear that your representatives voted insupport of the death penalty for those accused of killing law enforcement officers…

More frustration is to come:The State Senate voted today, June 20, in a sneaky move, on the last day of the legislative session, for a quick fix to New York State’s thoroughly discredited death penalty law, a law that applies not only to cop-killers.

The quick fix addresses only the flaw cited by the Court of Appeals in its June 2004 ruling. It leaves intact all the other flaws in that law. (It does nothing to address New York State’s wrongful conviction problem, the problem that could lead to the death of innocents.)

Five Democrats voted in favor of the measure, including Long Island’s own Craig Johnson (Nassau County). Johnson had, in his campaign, stated that he would NOT vote for such a bill, and told us in a private meeting that he would not support a general death penalty. Those of you in Johnson’s district might want to give him a special call to let him know you’re aware of his actions. His address and phone number are below.

Of course, all other Long Island Senators voted for the death penalty again: Owen Johnson, Carl Marcellino, Caesar Trunzo, Kemp Hannon, Charles Fuschillo, Kenneth Lavalle.

This is the last time the Senate will vote on these issues for this legislative session.

If you’re frustrated, let your frustration translate into action. Tell your Senator to stop wasting time and taxpayer dollars on a flawed and immoral system.

In peace,
