Circle of women: Message to Cynthia McKinney

[Update on February 11, 2008: Communication was restored. Cynthia McKinney felt supported. Cynthia McKinney announced for Green Party president.  Another political happy-ending story.]

From Kimberly:

Man, oh, man…I mean woman, oh, woman.

I had the pleasure of shaking Cynthia McKinney’s hand at the Reading, PA meeting, but I never really got a chance to speak with her. And, so much is swirling about, I can’t figure out which web-sites and e-mail truly lead to the woman, herself, who I would be honored to speak with.

Though, I know a woman who is even more important than me, who also wanted to talk to Cynthia McKinney.

Cat Woods of California is a strong, woman leader in our party. Cat Woods cares a lot about presidential politics. And, she worked her way all the way up to being one of the two Co-Chairs of the Green Party of the United States Presidential Campaign Support Committee (PCSC). One of the committee’s jobs is to communicate with the candidates on behalf of the party. Cat has been trying to communicate with Cynthia McKinney for ages.

I feel bad for Cat. After all that work to be in the mix, support candidates, and help ensure efficiency and good communication in our party, Cat finds out that before Cat ever got a chance to talk to Cynthia McKinney, Cynthia sent a withdrawal letter to the GP-US Steering Committee. It’s a shame that the letter didn’t go to Cat Woods first, as the Co-Chair of PCSC who has been eager to work with Cynthia McKinney.

Oh, well. Here is my plea:

Cynthia, it is clear that some weird stuff happened at the California plenary. As we all know, politics is by definition a messy endeavor, and it seems there is a lot of stuff to sort out about why votes were set up and how. I think we could all use a conflict resolution session just to understand exactly what happened and who was on what side. But, please, please, don’t ignore volunteers like me and Cat, please don’t ignore the women in the party, who really, truly, want to have your ear, express our support, and show you what the Green Party can truly offer.

Cynthia McKinney, oh, please don’t go.

Sincerely,
Kimberly Wilder

  1. Thank you so much for your comment and information.

Since I have served on a statewide Governor campaign before, I know that it is rare for there to be an e-mail that goes straight to the candidate. Imagine as a former Congressperson, how Cynthia is used to having staff and secretaries and screeners.

I truly encourage people to contact Cynthia via the above method — the “hq e-mail”, because perhaps it does go straight to her. And, we should use lots of angles to try to reach her.

But, I would also hope that people who have a unique idea or message, or who want to go the extra mile, find ways to reach out such as snail mail, mutual friends, and organizations Cynthia is a part of. For example, at Cynthia McKinney’s Congressional campaign web-site there is a PO Box.

Part of the problem with running an important, famous person, who has done and does many good things is, it is clear that it can’t be easy to reach them. There is only so much time in a day. Does anyone have an e-mail address that they know goes directly to Ralph Nader? Gloria Steinem? Maya Angelou? Michael Moore? Cornell West? Kayne West?
