Jean Ritchie, a Foghat-ter & the Good Rats go to Queens

Folk Music Legend Jean Ritchie, Drummer Roger Earl of Foghat and The Good Rats to Attend The Long Island Music Hall of Fame Second Annual Induction Gala on October 21, 2007 at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College

Folk music legend Jean Ritchie, drummer Roger Earl of Foghat and the five original members of The Good Rats have been added to the attendees list for The Long Island Music Hall of Fame’s (www.limusichalloffame.org) second annual Induction Gala on October 21st at the Colden Auditorium of the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College, the organization announced today. This year’s Queens induction venue is especially significant, given the connections that many of the 2007 nominees and presenters have to the borough. More about this at www.limusichalloffame.org.

By 1950, Jean Ritchie was an important figure on the New York folk scene, her influence probably best shown by the fact that dulcimers, almost unknown instruments in New York, were suddenly in demand.  Today she is credited with almost single-handedly reviving interest in the mountain dulcimer and with helping to establish its prominence as more than a regional folk instrument. She has recorded more than 30 albums for different labels, including her own Greenhays label, Ms. Ritchie has performed throughout the U.S., around the world and extensively for television. She has lived in Port Washington since 1956. Visit her at http://www.jeanritchie.com/.

Drummer Roger Earl of the seminal 1970s band Foghat was born in England and grew up in Hounslow (West London). He left school at 16 to pursue a career in commercial art in London to support his ‘drum & cymbal habit’. He did this until he joined Savoy Brown at the age of 20. In December of 1970, Roger, Dave Peverett and Tony Stevens left Savoy Brown to form Foghat. They became an immediate success, following up their gold-record debut with lots of other gold albums. Roger moved to Long Island in the mid-1980s. In 1993, the four original members of Foghat recorded ‘Return of the Boogie Men’ and they were on the road again. Good Rats founder Peppi Marchello was born in Brooklyn Long Island, and moved further east with his family when he was young. His early band underwent a series of personnel changes and eventually, the “classic” line-up of the Marchello brothers, Lenny Kottke, Joe Franco and John “The Cat” Gatto came together. In 1974, the band was signed to Warner Brothers where they released the now-classic album “Tasty”. Several years later, Rat City Records was born. The band released six successful albums on the label between 1975 and 1981, and also reissued a remixed “Tasty” – and never failed to draw huge crowds to their live shows. LIMHOF Chairman Richard L’ Hommedieu said: “We’re very excited that artists of the stature of Jean Ritchie, Roger Earl and The Good Rats have agreed to join so many others to help us celebrate Long Island’s rich musical heritage. We look forward to a great evening in October.”

About LIMHOF – The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is a 501(c)(3) membership organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which defines Long Island geographically rather than politically, as Kings, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties, was created as a place to inspire in each person the desire to explore and celebrate music in all its forms and to be a place where the music community will find the support, resources and leadership necessary to aid them in that exploration. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame sponsors the Long Island Sound Award, traveling educational exhibits and is working to create a permanent home for the story of the Island’s musical heritage.

They will present their Second Annual Long Island Music Hall of Fame Induction Gala on October 21, 2007 at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College CUNY, in Flushing, Queens.
