From Kimberly:
I have to tell you. I truly admire Oprah Winfrey.
And, it is not just because a half to a third of her tv show is about useful things, such as injustices, self-improvement, and examining relationships. It is also because of the way she spoke out against the meat industry and triumphed. It is also because, when I lived in the country in Virginia, I happened upon a glimpse of her on Public Television, bidding on Shaker boxes. And, because, news stories report that when President Bush offered Oprah to do some “women’s tour” of the Middle East–which was clearly propaganda for one of the wars–Oprah declined. Saying “No” to the request of a bad President, now that is something.
I was very excited last year, when I saw that some man was recruiting Oprah to run for President. Web-site here. (I don’t think Oprah appreciated the action or the web-site.)
I truly think that there is someone out there–or some pulse in the body politic–that measures each independent candidate, each suggestion of the masses, and steers the ship a certain way based on that yearning. So, even though, at the time, Oprah was really against being drafted for President, I left her name up on the wilderside People’s President Page.
I am not a Barak Obama fan. Though, Oprah has decided to campaign beside him. (Video here.) And, I am pleased as usual with Oprah’s decision. I think it is amazing that she has jumped into the Presidential campaign by supporting someone else. I think it is strategic and brave to have recognized the level she was on when she got the Bush invite, and decide to apply that power in the way she has. And, I truly think she will bring not just black people to the polls, but a lot of women who don’t usually dive in to politics. I still think she is amazing.
And, out of respect for Oprah’s own political voice, and the right to steer her own direction, I am–in a day or two–going to take her off my list of independent, Presidential candidates. But, I am doing so with as much reluctance as I had when I took Cindy Sheehan off the list. Cindy Sheehan, I could let go of, because she is making a bold and strategic race for Congress. And, Oprah, I must let go of, because she has chosen her own, unique path in this campaign.
Could it be, Oprah 2012?
