Care2 & ThePetitionSite get on the Unfair Elections gravy train

The so-called “Fair Elections Act” bill they want you to sign on to has a lower threshold for qualifying for Democratic and Republican candidates than everyone else. Tell Care2 to ditch this corrupt bill.

The Fair Elections Now Act is about as appropriately names as the Bush Clean Skies Act or the Bush Leave No Child Behind Act.   It helps the Republicans & Democrats who have been supporting the Bush agenda for the last 6 years get re-elected while putting more onerous requirements in independent and third-party candidates  (like Green Party candidates) who have consistently opposed the Bush agenda from meeting the requirements.  All third-party and independent candidates have to collect 150% of what these Bush Republicans and Democrats have to collect to qualify for the same funds.  There is no reason for the legislation to have a higher threshold for some candidates than others. This favors the incumbents who are responsible for bringing us the Bush agenda. Tell Care2 that you don’t support this.

Dear Ian,The most corrupting influence on American democracy is big money. Just look at the recent scandals — Delay, Abramoff, Jefferson — and you can see how the skyrocketing cost of campaigns is leading to candidates becoming more and more indebted to wealthy donors and special interests.

We need to change the way election campaigns are financed.»

Specifically, we need a public financing system that works — a way to free candidates from fundraising so that they can spend time talking with voters instead. That’s why the bipartisan Fair Elections Now Act (S.1285) is important.

The bill would create a fully voluntary system of public funding for Senate candidates. Help get the influence of big money out of politics and put democracy into the hands of the people, support the Fair Elections Now Act now.»

Thanks for taking action!Samer
