Ecotravel: Clearwater Festival in Croton-on-Hudson, NY

2009 Update: For Clearwater tickets for 2009, go here.

Also, see the post below from last year? At least gas prices are a little better. Guess that is something to be cheery about. Come to think of it, better go to Clearwater and hear some uplifting music!

2008 Post:

Do gas prices have you thinking about ecotourism right here, in New York state?

Some people go through great lengths, or travel to other countries in order to balance fun and relaxation with service to the environment. Though, there is a great opportunity to have your very own Volunteer Eco-Vacation right here in New York this summer. You have to sign up in the next few days, though.

Go to Clearwater Festival and check out how to volunteer. You have to put in a lot of hours. Though, the way it works, it is almost like a Club Med vacation for sustainability activists. You give a small donation to the Clearwater organization (which works throughout the year to clean up the Hudson, and educate about the environment.) And, then, you get benefits such as: free camping on the grounds; 7 free meals with lots of vegan and vegetarian choices; a t-shirt; two special parties; and free weekend passes to see the bands. And, with all the working together, eating together, camping together, and listening to music, the volunteers at Clearwater become their own special community.

More information about volunteering is at the web-site, or contact volcoord at clearwater dot org or (845) 454-7673. The deadline to send in a volunteer donation and application is June 3rd by mail or June 10th by fax or online.

If you can’t volunteer this time around, please make sure to come, at least! There is so much to do and so much to learn. A great start to the summer season.

The Clearwater Hudson River Revival 2008
Music & Environmental Festival
Village of Croton-on-Hudson,
Westchester County

Saturday, June 21st and Sunday June 22nd
10am to dusk

Performers include: The Kennedys; Sarah Underhill; The Raging Grannies;
R. Carlos Nakai (Native Flute); Skatalites; Gandolf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams; David Amram; Pete Seeger; The Felice Brothers; Magpie.

And many more, in fact, 5 stages of performers such as: singers, songwriters, storytellers, bands. In the styles of Ska, Bluegrass, Reggae, Swing, Cajon, Latin, and more. Also, an activist section, and crafts and vendors that environmentalists will appreciate. (I get my most fun clothes at Clearwater! And, found my prettiest bamboo flute there one year.)

This year there will also be a new experiment. Pete Seeger’s newest vision is a tent called the “Circle of Gospel” where the audience will sing with and learn from gospel groups in an interactive songfest.

If you want to come to Clearwater for some good music and sense of community, regular price at the gate is $45 for one day and $60 for the weekend. Reduced price for members.
