Bruno won’t seek reeelection, Skelos may replace him
BY JAMES T. MADORE: June 24, 2008: ALBANY
In a move that rocked state government, Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno announced Monday night that he will not seek re-election this fall to the upstate seat he’s held since 1976…
Earlier, Bruno, one of the state’s top three leaders for 14 years, said, “It is time for me to move on with my life.”
But his decision came as federal prosecutors continued to investigate his business dealings, and Republicans face the prospect of losing control of the Senate for the first time in more than 40 years…
Bruno, 79, lost his wife of 57 years in January…
While colleagues on both sides of the aisle praised Bruno, state Democratic Party chairwoman June O’Neill said he was leaving because her party will take over the Senate after the fall elections. “Joe Bruno looked across the table and saw we had a royal flush.”
