Inauguration coverage: Reflections on President Obama’s speech

Were you looking for info on President Obama’s speech on February 24th? A thorough AFP article is: here.

_______________________

Live blogging by Kimberly Wilder, one green’s perspective on Inauguration Day:

A line that is very personal to his story…

“A parent’s decision to nurture a child which finally decided our fate…”

Some ideas from the speech:

It was kind of depressing to hear this speech. Because, we all know that we are heading for a financial crisis and hard times, but they are not exactly here yet for all of us. But, Barack Obama keeps talking about it. It makes it start to get real that the money and prosperity is going to dry up.

“We reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.” Pledge to constitution and civil liberties. (Although, I heard that Obama just condones continued spying at libraries, etc. Have to see how that plays out…)

Says that the argument is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works. Sounds good, way to unify conservative with liberal. Only the ending is that if programs don’t work we end them, and who will decide if they are not working?

Restore vital trust between the people and their government…talks about accountability and transparency and reform…

Message to world…America is ready to lead…in values of peace and dignity

Message to Muslim World…interesting to say that so pointedly. We will find a new way forward…ie: cooperation.

“We will not apologize for our way of life. ” President Obama says, as something to terrorists that we will be proud and not let them deter us. Though, it also seems like we will be wasteful and consumer if we want…

Acknowledges that the market can spiral out of control, so we must have a watchful eye…

A new era of responsibility, duties to ourselves, to our nation, and to the world…the price and the promise of citizenship

“God calls upon us…” Obama is putting a lot of religion into this speech. That does not match everyone’s beliefs…

Ending…in this wintery time, let it be said that we carried the gift of Freedom safely to future generations…

Now, poetry by Elizabeth Alexander…

Amy Goodman liked it. I could only process with one ear. Interesting, modern images.

Ending prayers…
