Community Meeting: ESOL Programming on Long Island 11/19/08

Building an Island of Opportunity:
ESOL Programming on Long Island

Did you know that there is a serious shortage of classes for those who wish to learn English? It’s true.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes fill up even before they are advertised, and programs have waiting lists with hundreds of interested students.

While the number of immigrants on Long Island has increased dramatically the number of seats in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes has not.
In fact, programs continue to lose funding. We must address this disconnect to ensure Long Island’s future. ESOL programs open avenues of communication between neighbors. They enable access to career and community opportunities for new immigrants.

Together we can work to ensure that every person who wants to learn English has this important opportunity.

Come learn what you can do to address this serious need on Long Island.
Meet leaders from our local community and participate in an analysis of the current status of ESOL opportunities and funding.
This meeting is for those already involved in ESOL programs as students or teachers, those interested in learning more, and those concerned with assistance to immigrants.
