Sat. March 20: Vigil for Peace in Long Island

2007 Archival photo: Another LI peace demo

This event is located in Setauket (a little east of Stony Brook University). Many  groups throughout the island are endorsing this demo, as a big, war-anniversary event:

A March & Vigil for Peace
Not one more death!
Not one more dollar!

A vigil to mark the
7th Anniversary
of the Invasion of Iraq

Saturday, March 20, 2010
10:15 a.m
. – Gather at King Kullen Shopping Center (In front of Chase Bank, across from St. James Catholic Church), Rt. 25A, Setauket
10:30 a.m. – Proceed east along stores to Stop & Shop, then west to Bennetts Road/25A
11:00 a.m. – Noon – Reading of the names of Long Islanders killed in Iraq and Afghanistan; speakers, vigil and demonstration.

Sponsored by the North Country Peace Group and other Long Island peace groups. For more information, contact the North Country Peace Group: ncpeaceg at gmail dot com
Since December 2002, the North Country Peace Group has demonstrated every Saturday morning at the corner of 25A and Bennetts Road in Setauket, initially to oppose the use of force in Iraq, and after the invasion,
to demand an end to the wars both in Iraq and Afghanistan and the safe return of our troops.

Over 4,382 American troops have died since the U.S. invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003, along with estimates of over 104,000 Iraqis. More than 1,019 U.S. troops have died since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

As we enter the EIGHTH YEAR of the immoral, illegal and costly war in Iraq – particularly at a time when American families are struggling to keep their homes and pay their bills – we encourage our fellow community
members to join us in solidarity for peace and justice in the middle east.

As of March 1, 2010, the war in Iraq alone had cost U.S. taxpayers $711 billion. To date, we have spent a staggering $970 BILLION on the two wars combined!

  1. Any coordination with Code Pink ??????

Any coordination with veterans groups ??????

    • Yes. I believe that among the many local groups that endorsed were Code Pink and a local veterans peace group. I was not part of the planning this time. But, they are usually done with lots of cooperation.

    • Yes and yes. CODEPINK Long Island and Veterans for Peace Long Island are both among the endorsers. Other endorsers are Suffolk Peace Network, Pax Christi Long Island, South Country Peace Group, Women In Black- Long Island, Suffolk Progressive Vision, Social Justice Alliance of Stony Brook University, and Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives.
