Gov Paterson commutes sentence of John White

Full story at Newsday: here. There is a news conference planned for this afternoon.

John White, convicted of fatally shooting a Selden teenager outside his home in Miller Place in 2006* in what became a racially charged case, was released from prison Thursday morning after Gov. David A. Paterson commuted his sentence.

Paterson did not issue a pardon, but commuted the 1 1/3-to-4 year sentence to time served. White, 56, had surrendered to begin serving his sentence in July…

“Our society strives to be just, but the pursuit of justice is a difficult and arduous endeavor,” Paterson said. “While the incident and Mr. White’s trial engendered much controversy and comment, and varying assessments of justice were perceived, its most common feature was heartbreak. My decision today may be an affront to some and a joy to others, but my objective is only to seek to ameliorate the profound suffering that occurred as a result of this tragic event.”..

White’s attorney, Fred Brewington, planned an early afternoon news conference…

*The actual shooting began with an argument between teens at a house party in Sound Beach and ended when [Daniel] Cicciaro came to White’s home to confront White’s son, Aaron – and White shot him…[John White is African-American]
