Tribute to Morty Greenhouse 1922-2011

(Video of a song tribute below.)

Message from the Greenhouse family:

Dear Friend,

We are inviting friends, colleagues and relatives of Mortimer Greenhouse to a combined tribute and celebration of his life on Saturday, June 18. The celebration will include remembrances, tributes and folksinging.

Morty died on May 27, the day after his 89th birthday.  A child of the Depression and a World War II veteran, Morty was one of the founders of the Long Island Progressive Coalition, the South Shore Forum and Peacesmith House. Morty was a tireless idealist – he could be found at civil rights and ban the bomb demonstrations in the 1960s, protests against the Vietnam War, demonstrations for a nuclear freeze and, more recently, marches against the War in Iraq and for economic justice. One long-time friend wrote that Morty “never gave up on the struggle to try and make this bad old world a better place. When we succumbed to despair, Morty continued the battle.”

The tribute and celebration will be held at 2:30 p.m., June 18, at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island at 38 Old Country Road, Garden City, about a mile west of the Meadowbrook Parkway.
