Come buy our very fun “Presidential Votes for Women” t-shirt, with a layered message, and a wink to the Suffragettes! We have it for sale (in white background or blue background) at a print-on-demand website.
If you buy it this weekend, you should get it a few days before election day! (Maybe in time for the November 2nd Women’s March?)
This shirt would also make a wild fashion statement if worn on Broadway to Suffs The Musical! (Thanks to whoever got the Suffs on to Broadway when a tribute to the Suffragists and Suffragettes is so needed! Women, let’s gather together and vote!)
How did this project unfold?
My name is Kimberly Wilder. I am a poet, a former Green Party candidate, a progressive and third party activist, and a former organizer of a coffee house with the theme of peace, justice, and the environment. I have been a participant in Women’s March activities. I want Roe v Wade back!
I want to inspire everyone — but especially women — to get out the vote in a way that will help restore our reproductive rights and bring back at least the level of civil rights women had with Roe v. Wade.
Many years ago, while my husband and I were touring northern New York, we ran across an artist selling a fascinating piece of artwork. It was a woman in a Suffragist era hat, with words that said “Votes for Women”. The story the artist shared was that the outline for her image was a genuine block print stamp that Suffragists had used to print posters. And, then, the artist filled it in with artistry and warm pastel colors. We were so excited to purchase it, and it stills hangs in my kitchen.
So, almost everyday of my life, I think about the slogan “Votes for Women”, and how it could mean that women have the right to vote, but also, that women are worthy of voting for. Indeed, I used the “Votes for Women” picture in one of my campaign shots when I ran (unsuccessfully) for Lieutenant Governor of NY on a minor party line!
When Kamala Harris became a Presidential candidate, I couldn’t help but think of my sign and the meanings it had for me. So, I finally asked a friend with some art skills to help me design this shirt. It has the words “Votes for Women” in a font that looks early 20th century, like the Suffragette signs. Then — as modern women — the artist and I have scribbled “Presidential” above it, in a font that says, “Pay attention! This is your time to rise up and use those votes for women to vote for a woman!”
If anyone knows me and my politics, I am very democracy-curious. So, the t-shirt design, and this wonderful slogan, are meant to hint that the Green Party candidate (Jill Stein) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation candidate (Claudia De la Cruz), are also women whom a person could vote for to send a message to the powers that be: Women will be free! Restore the protections of Roe v. Wade!!!!!
(And, if there is anyone else out there with the inclination to support Kamala Harris, and Jill Stein, and Claudia De la Cruz as voting options, I made a shirt for that, too!)
Be well! And, don’t forget to vote (for a woman) on Tuesday, November 5th!!!!
