Yesterday was just the Global Warming parade!

This afternoon, activists and occupiers take to Wall Street. Find updates with Twitter update #FloodWallStreet.

Thousands of occupiers. Moving sit-ins. I think the action is focused on Broadway. Street closed at one point between Exchange Place and The Bull. There is some police activity.

Green Party of Suffolk Update on Esposito, Hackeling, and Gaza Position

Only Green Party candidates Refuse Corporate Donations The Green Party of New York State has a ban on endorsing Democratic and Republican candidates because those parties do not agree with the Green Party’s worldwide Four Pillars of Social and Economic Justice; Grassroots Democracy; Ecological Wisdom and Nonviolence/Peace.

Democratic and Republican Party insiders have taken advantage of New York State Election law to place their candidates on the Green Party line. Democratic Party candidate Adrienne Esposito will appear on the Green Party line in the New York Third (3rd) State Senate District which district runs along the south shore of Long Island from Brentwood to Center Moriches. In addition, Republican Party Huntington District Court Judge candidates Steve Hackeling, Walter Long, and Paul Senzer.

The Green Party Governor candidate, Howie Hawkins http://www.howiehawkins.org, has raised nonviolence issues to be addressed in this year’s State races. Hawkins and and his Lt. Hawkins: Teachout Primary Shows Path for Green Party to November Victory

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for New York State Governor, said that the extremely high vote total against Cuomo in the Democratic Primary shows that many New Yorkers reject his conservative economic policies.

Hawkins congratulated Zephyr Teachout on running a strong, spirited campaign challenging Cuomo’s record.”It was good that citizen activists rejected the backroom deal hammered out by leaders of the Democratic and Working Families parties and a few labor bureaucrats. I applaud their courage in standing up to Cuomo, his favors to campaign contributors, his culture of intimidation. The Green Party looks forward to completing this job, providing the only progressive alternative to Cuomo on November 4,” said Hawkins

Ralph Nader and Grover Norquist Agree on Corporate Welfare and Auditing the Pentagon

Consumer advocate Ralph Nader and anti-tax activist Grover Norquist spoke on issues where the left and right can come together at a National Press Club luncheon on Sept. 4, 2014.

The failure to pass these majority supported issues shows why we need to open up elections to elect more than the two corporate parties.

The lame media questions — and lack of media coverage — show that we also need to open up media channels to more than the corporate media.

The terrible news of the passing of Robin Williams reached me here in the Peruvian Amazon late last night with tremendous sadness. Surrounded by over 100 friends and clowns on our annual clown trip here we mourn this tragic loss and continue to treasure his comic genius.

Robin Williams was a wonderful, kind, and generous man. One important thing I remember about his personality is that he was unassuming—he never acted as if he was powerful or famous. Instead, he was always tender and welcoming—willing to help others with a smile or a joke. Robin was a brilliant comedian—there is no doubt. He was a compassionate, caring human being. While watching him work on the set of the film based on my life—Patch Adams, dir. Tom Shadyac—I saw that whenever there was a stressful moment, Robin would tap into his improvisation style to lighten the mood of cast and crew. Also—I would like to point out—Robin would be especially kind toward my children when they would visit the set.

Contrary to how many people may view him, he actually seemed to me to be an introvert. When he invited me and my family into his home, he valued peace and quiet, a chance to breathe—a chance to get away from the fame that his talent has brought him. While early in life he turned to drug use and alcohol to escape, he replaced the addiction with moments of solitude to help cope with the stress that fame brought. This world is not kind to people who become famous, and the fame he had garnered was a nightmare. While saddened, we are left with the consequences of his death.

I’m enormously grateful for his wonderful performance of my early life which has allowed Gesundheit to continue and expand our work. We extend our blessings to his family and friends in this moment of sadness.

Thank you for all you’ve given this world Robin, thank you my friend.

Astorino Must Desegregate Housing to Improve Schools

NY Green Party Guv Hawkins: Astorino Clearly Not A Supporter of Fair Housing for People of Color

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for New York Governor, said today that improving access to affordable housing was critical to improving education in New York State. Recent studies have found that US schools are more segregated today than before the US Supreme Court decision on Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education. New York State schools are the most segregated in the nation.

Hawkins says that Rob Astorino‘s record as County Executive in the Westchester housing desegregation dispute with the federal government shows that he would be unqualified to resolve this problem statewide. Hawkins said that
he sided with the Anti-Discrimination Center and civil right groups in their criticism of the county’s mishandling of the implementation the housing discrimination consent decree. This includes the issue of how the impact of
restrictive zoning by Westchester governments is evaluated to show that people of color are denied equal access to fair housing.

Hawkins has also been critical of Astorino’s decision to create a Stop Common Core ballot line, saying that Astorino is an anti-public education candidate:

“Astorino may stop Common Core but he will increase Cuomo’s looting public education by underfunding public schools and pushing privately managed charter schools, private education tax credits, and vouchers.” Read more »

Anacoustic Minds was founded by former Simple Minds drummer Mike Ogletree. The current incarnation of the band includes bandleader and songwriter Ogletree along with singer-omnichordist and fellow Scot Brookes McKenzie, singer and Louisiana native soul sensation David Turner, with djembe by Tem Noon when he can make it here from his home asteroid in another galaxy. Their mission is to bring a message of Universal Peace through Art to the universe via the call to arms of their genre-bending Scots-Reggae music.

Green Party seeks NY 3rd State Senate District candidate to support women and fight corruption

Democratic Party insiders have petitioned to open a write-in primary for the Green Party line in the New York Third (3rd) State Senate race. Green Party members interested in running as a candidate in the primary can contact 631-925-6104 or info@gpsuffolk.org. The district runs along the south shore of Long Island from Brentwood to Center Moriches. Lee Zeldin is the current State Senator. The State Primary is September 9, 2014. There is also a Democratic Primary in that race between Joseph Fritz and Adrienne Esposito.

The Green Party governor candidate, Howie Hawkins http://www.howiehawkins.org, has already raised a number of issues to be addressed in this year’s State races. Hawkins has called for a criminal investigation of NY Governor Andrew Cuomo and Cuomo’s disbanded Moreland Commission. Hawkins finds that Cuomo’s $40 million campaign war chest makes Cuomo the “kingpin” of the “pay-to-play political culture driven by large checks.” Hawkins asserts that “Cuomo and his staff however ensured that key issues that would reflect badly on him were stricken from the report, especially information that investigators had learned about the powerful Real Estate Board of New York and its political donations.” Read more »

How to Win a Presidential Election?

I recently answered the question on Quora: “Why did Mitt Romney lose the 2012 Presidential election?” My answer about the axioms that determined the last Presidential election can be generally:

There are two political axioms that come into play in answering why Romney lost to Obama. One general. One specific.

Incumbents lose; Challengers don’t win. In every political race, the incumbent has the upper hand. Despite comments to the contrary, Americans don’t like change. They will keep the devil they know.

Obama ran a winning campaign. He kept his focus on getting votes. You might think this is obvious but looking at other recent Democratic presidential candidates, they got distracted from actually getting people to vote for them. A case in point is Obama’s refusal to waste energy on throwing 3rd party candidates off the ballot as prior Democrat presidential candidates had. This exercise is focused on stopping people from voting for the candidates that they want, rather than focusing on convincing people to vote for you. It is a drain on resources, a distraction, and creates unneeded ill will.

Obama won the 3 hour car ride test. The majority of American voters already know who they are voting for, elections are determined by the relatively few in the middle who have to be convinced. Those in the middle know that whichever candidate that they choose, they will get the short end of the stick. Presidential elections, to the middle, are like the tagline from Alien vs. Predator: “Whoever wins, we lose.” Read more »

8th Boog City Fest Sked 8/1-8/5/14

Aug. 5, 2014, Boog will be celebrating its 23rd anniversary by putting on the eighth annual Welcome to Boog City poetry, music, and theater festival. It will feature 66 poets, 16 musical acts, 9 poets theater plays, 2 poets in conversation with one another, 1 political talk, 1 d.a. levy lives visiting press, and 1 panel over the five days.

Among the festival highlights are:

—A performance by Ed Sanders, a large figure in the counter-culture of the sixties to today, member of The Fugs, and an award-winning poet.

—Boog’s d.a. levy lives series kicks off its 12th season devoting a night to Ithaca, N.Y.’s Stockport Flats;
