Who should replace Ed DeMarco?

Federal Housing Finance AgencyThe Vice President’s son — Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden — came out in support of replacing acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Ed DeMarco.  FHFA is the conservator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As the overseer of Freddie and Fannie, DeMarco has thwarted a housing recovery. Read more »

St. Patrick’s Day message from the band Black 47

Oxalis acetosella

We are on the e-mail list for Larry Kirwan and the band Black 47. Below is the St. Patrick’s Day message they sent around this week. We thought it was beautiful and inspiring. (Note that Black 47 will be playing in New York City on the day of the big parade, Saturday, March 16th.)

Saint Patrick’s Day Message
from Black 47

On one day a year, they congregated outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral off Prince Street in New York City and marched in celebration. To some of these immigrant Irish and their American born children it was a religious occasion, but to most the gathering was an affirmation of their right, not only to survive but to thrive in their adopted country. That’s what I sense on St. Patrick’s Day – an echo from a time when the Irish were despised outsiders. And that’s why I go along with the raucous energy, the excitement and even the green beer, the plastic shamrocks and the ubiquitous leprechaun.

I didn’t always feel that way. When I arrived from Ireland, these manifestations of Irish-America were at best embarrassing. Back home, our own celebrations were rigid and religious; we did sport actual sprigs of shamrock but there was no beer, green or otherwise on this gloomy church holiday. The Parade up Fifth Avenue and the ensuing bacchanal seemed downright pagan by comparison. Read more »

Protests continue for Brooklyn teen shot by NYPD

Kimani “Kiki” Gray, age 16, was shot by police on Saturday night. Protests and vigils are continuing in his neighborhood.

There is an excellent story at Gothamist (hat tip to Occupy Wall St NYC Twitter for the link). Excerpt below. The whole story gives interesting details, and perspectives from the family, neighborhood, and status quo.

“Don’t Shoot Me”: Cops Arrest And Pepper Spray Protesters At Third Kimani Gray Vigil

For the third night in a row, people took to the streets of East Flatbush to voice their outrage at the NYPD’s fatal shooting of Kimani “Kiki” Gray. Though the 16-year-old’s death was the most obvious catalyst the night’s protest, it was clear that frustration with the NYPD extended beyond this one case, as demonstrators taunted cops all night with chants of “Don’t Shoot Me!” Read more »

DeMarco Hearing 3/19/13: Call your Congressperson

Fannie Mae (song)We have posted here before about Ed DeMarco, the acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which is the conservator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

DeMarco needs to be replaced.  We have written extensively about why in 2/7/13: Help for housing market and foreclosures: Letter to Obama and Save Tax Dollars: Fire DeMarco from FHFA.

DeMarco is to testify before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services on March 19, 2013.  The meeting notice is below. We need to let our Congresspersons know that DeMarco needs to be forced out.  Click here to find the members of the Financial Services Committee. Read more »

CSA’s on Long Island: Photos from a NOFA event

NOFA event: The children play and say "Eat local"!Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a way to belong to a farm or garden, while supporting the farmer, and celebrating the act of “eating local”. Many CSA’s are organic.

Ian and I visited the NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) fair on March 2nd. It was a chance for people to learn about CSA’s, and possibly join one for the upcoming season. (Spring is coming!)

We joined Biophilia in Riverhead — our new home. And, we brought back ideas and photos from the other markets and CSA’s who came to table. It was a great event!

Suffolk Theater’s Grand Opening

What a delight it was to attend the Riverhead Suffolk Theater Grand Opening party on Saturday March 2nd. The Executive Director Bob Spiotto and his staff have done a wonderful job of breathing new life into this beautiful performance forum.

The orchestra, terrific dance floor performances and “1930’s period costuming” on the part of the staff and audience was a joy to behold. The theater’s acoustics, coupled with general restoration detail is noteworthy in its authenticity and tender loving care. The 1930’s theme, brought forward in time, works splendidly. The hors d’oeuvres and refreshments were tasty and imaginative in their Caribbean flair, and the staff worked earnestly throughout the evening to make for a fun and memorable experience!

Check out the upcoming events and programs going forward. The theater’s management has blessed us with offerings for everyone on many levels! Do take advantage of their hearty efforts!

Namaste,
Steve Siegelwaks

Can the President kill you with a drone strike on American soil?

As Rand Paul notes…

President Obama will not say.

But, Obama and his CIA nominee have released statements that kind of say…probably. There are probably times when the President has the authority and will execute Americans on American soil with drone strikes.

Congrats to Rand Paul for holding a filibuster in the US Senate. Paul is holding up a vote on the nominee until the President clearly answers the question about if he has the right to kill Americans on American soil with a drone strike, and no jury.

You can watch live on C-Span: here.

It is cool that the filibuster is trending on Twitter in the form of tags about drones, and accolades for Rand Paul. Read more »

Suffolk Theater opens in Riverhead: Ribbon Cutting photos

Suffolk Theater: Grand Opening

The Riverhead community celebrated the re-opening of the Suffolk Theater on Main Street. The building is from the 1930’s, and the celebration included a historical tip of the hat.

There were folks young and old, politicians, a beauty queen with tiara and sash, live music (including a tuba), and lots of fun.

Ian and I were NOT the only ones dancing!

We will write more later. You can check out the Suffolk Theater and find their upcoming shows: here. It is quite an eclectic mix.

And, you can see our photos of the Suffolk Theater ribbon-cutting at Flickr: here.

Congratulations, Riverhead!

LIPA hearing in New York State Senate

LILCO failed Long Island! We tried privatization years ago. Then, we were promised a “people’s power authority” with elections. That was squashed. And, Governor Cuomo and others want to go BACKWARDS to privatization.

See the discussion live from the NY State Senate.

There is some spunky questioning going on now (Wednesday morning and lunchtime). See what may happen with Long Island Power Authority!!!

You can find the page, with info and related links at:

The Moreland Commission folks are very closed-lipped and posturing. They are claiming they can’t answer some (very easy) questions, because they are still working and have not made their report.

In Italy: Elections show success of new, anti-austerity party: “The Five Star Movement”

Italy’s “Five Star Movement” sounds a lot like the Green Party pillars and/or the Occupy Movement. Hope folks in the United States can keep linking in to the powerful, anti-austerity energy in Europe.

Big Winner in Italian Election? The Five Star Movement
The Big Loser? Austerity

Feb 26, 2013 / by Craig Brown

Italy’s two major political parties are stunned by the results of this week’s elections: the dramatic surge of the anti-establishment Movimento Cinque Stelle (The Five Star Movement).

The actual outcome of the Italian election remains in doubt, but there’s no question who the big winner was: comedian-turned-political activist Beppe Grillo and the Five Star Movement (M5S)…

The Five Star Movement’s anti-austerity, anti-establishment message struck a chord with millions of Italians. The ‘Five Stars’ of the movement are the party’s core principles:

1. Publicly owned water
2. Sustainable transportation
3. Sustainable development
4. Free and open internet access
5. Environmentalism
