Albany – The New York State Green Party said today that the Commissioners of the New York State Board of Elections should move immediately to close the infamous “LLC Loophole” that allows limited liability corporations to skirt corporate campaign finance laws and donate $150,000 a year to candidates. The Green Party pointed out that the Board of Elections can choose to reclassify LLCs as corporations for campaign finance purposes without approval from the Legislature or Governor Cuomo, putting a $5000 cap on donations. Green Party representatives said that while this would be an important reform, only full public campaign financing at all levels will eliminate New York State’s pay-to-play politics.

Homecoming Farm will be offering it’s Fifth Annual Spring Awakening on April 18, 2015 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at Helen Butler Hall at Dominican Village, 565 Albany Avenue, Amityville, NY 11701. The program is entitled “A Celebration of Thomas Berry and The Earth Community as One Community of Life. The registration fee of $30 per person includes lunch.

Remembering Danny Schechter, “The News Dissector”: Pioneering Journalist, Filmmaker & Activist | Democracy Now!.

The author, filmmaker and media reform activist Danny Schechter has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 72. Danny Schechter rose to prominence as the “The News Dissector” on Boston’s WBCN radio in the 1970s. He went on to work as a television producer at ABC’s 20/20, where he won two Emmy Awards, and at the newly launchedCNN. But he left corporate media to lead MediaChannel.org and Global Vision. Schechter wrote 12 books, including “The More You Watch, the Less You Know,” and was a leading activist and journalist against apartheid in South Africa, making six nonfiction films about Nelson Mandela. He was a frequent guest on Democracy Now! over the years. The last time he was on the program, he discussed the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.

Happy Pi Day of the Century!

Pi Day of the Century happens today. π is fun! You can experience ten digits of Pi at exactly 3/14/15 at 9:26 and 53 seconds.

To celebrate the beauty of math, and the perfection of circles, below is a classic poem. Onthewilderside dedicates this poem to anyone who has ever used Pi as a calculation…

Euclid

Old Euclid drew a circle
On a sand-beach long ago.
He bounded and enclosed it
With angles thus and so.
His set of solemn greybeards
Nodded and argued much
Of arc and circumference,
Diameter and such.
A silent child stood by them
From morning until noon
Because they drew such charming
Round pictures of the moon.

Thoughts on the poem, “Euclid”: When I read this poem in college, I thought it was saying that math was stodgy, boring, and not magical. Now that I am older, I see the poem as celebrating math, the purposefulness of the academics, and the way their studies are connected to the moon and to the wonder of childhood. -KW

This Pi Day, Saturday March 14th, is an epic day for engineers, mathematicians, and other number crunchers. As Edutopia.org points out, on Pi Day this year, 3.14.15, at 9:26:53, the date and time will reflect the first 10 digits of Pi (3.141592653). This math/date convergence happens only once per century.

We are sure that there will be a lot of Pi Day celebrations for high school students and college kids. Though, we wanted to make sure that preschoolers and young elementary students could get in on the act. Resources below about how to get little ones excited about Pi.
