Strengthen Fuel Economy Standards for Cars

For the health and safety of future generations, America needs to reduce our reliance on oil. Fortunately, a new opportunity to strengthen auto fuel economy standards is moving fast in the House of Representatives. On May 9 the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed a bill that gives the president authority to revise fuel economy standards for cars. While it is unlikely that the president would use this authority to make any meaningful changes, Representatives Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) and Edward Markey (D-MA) will propose an amendment to the bill when it reaches the full House that would require an increase in the fuel economy of both cars and light trucks to 33 miles per gallon by 2016. Please ask your representative, Peter King, to vote for the Boehlert-Markey fuel economy amendment and oppose any final legislation that fails to include a specific numeric increase in fuel economy.

High gas prices in our district as well as America's oil and environmental security are deeply concerning to me. Please help reduce auto pollution and our reliance on oil by supporting the Boehlert-Markey Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) amendment that would increase the fuel economy of America's vehicles to 33 miles per gallon by 2016.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee recently passed a bill that gives the president authority to revise fuel economy standards for cars. Given the administration's weak record on this issue, this is not a vote for better fuel economy.

The Boehlert-Markey CAFE amendment represents real leadership. A vote for this amendment would save consumers billions at the pump each year and reduce global warming pollution, all while maintaining the safety and performance that Americans have come to expect from their vehicles.

Please vote for this amendment when it comes to the House floor, and oppose any other amendments or final legislation that does not include a specific numeric increase in fuel economy.
