2008 Spoken Word Conference

Updated information: http://www.bradleyphoenix.com/SPOKEN%20WORD%20CONFERENCE.htm

SPOKEN-WORD CONFERENCE ON LONG ISLAND IN 2008

I’m Bradley Thunderbird Phoenix, and this is my pet project: To have an annual Spoken-Word Convention or Conference here in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. I’m launching this project in
the summer of 2008. I was part of a science fiction convention some years ago, but this is my project.

We have to start planning NOW! Even though it’s the summer of 2007.

WANTED: We need actors, actresses, to perform theatrical monologues and multi-character plays & skits, anti-war folk singers, Hip-Hop poets, stand-up comedians, and anyone interested in giving creative workshops. I hope to have Professor Herb Norman
to talk about the origins of radio and the Golden Age of Radio, Professor William Foster
to talk about Black comic books and the history of comic books.

I’m looking for performance poets!
I’m looking for folks to teach workshops (voice acting, creative writing, etc.)!

I’m looking for videographers and photographers!

I’m looking for theatrical companies to perform!

I’m looking for actors & actresses to perform some of my sci-fi & horror monologues!

I’m going to need high school students as pages and ushers!

I’m going to need cashiers! I’m going to need people for security!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE A WORKSHOP (creative writing, sound effects, poetry, voice acting, music, Hip Hop poetry, etc.)?

WHAT WILL TAKE PLACE AT THIS SPOKEN-WORD CONFERENCE

Workshops: For public speaking, creative writing, stand-up comedy, voice acting, radio theatre, comic books, etc.

Panel discussions: Freedom of Speech vs. the Bush White House, contemporary radio theater vs. classic, and more.

Performance Poets: Possibly Maya Angelou, other celebrities, well-known Long Island poets, and Hip Hop poets.

Poetry readings: Individuals from the audience will be invited to read their poems on stage or in workshops.

Audio theater: Modern radio (audio) theater on stage (with sound effects & music accompanying).

Dramatic readings: A reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s,“The Tell-Tale Heart”, Hamlet, or authors reading their stories.

Storytelling: Anecdotes / stories from celebrities or local artists gifted in the art of storytelling.

Stand-up comedy: Stand-up comedians (not interested in pornographic, foul language, or obscene material)
Impressionists: Talented individuals who can do dead-on impressions of famous people / Hollywood celebrities.

Dealers’ booths / tables: Local businesses, performing artists, and corporations (Borders Bookstore, Sam Ash, etc.)

SOME performers will be given transportation money because they are coming from other states!
MOST performers will be VOLUNTEERS from Long Island and NYC. For more details, contact me at:

THE IDEA FOR THIS CONFERENCE: I conceived it in 1997 and then became the general manager for a 1998 event at the SAC Auditorium that I named: Spoken-Word Theatre. This event married the audio theater and poetry communities. High-profile Long Island poets attended. Selected members of the audience were invited on stage to read their poetry. Contemporary radio theatre was performed on stage.

CO-FOUNDERS OF THIS 2008 CONFERENCE: Mindy Kronenberg and I, besides being co-founders, are Vice President and President of this conference respectively. (Our bios are BELOW).

POSSIBLE LOCATION FOR THIS EVENT: Stony Brook University or Suffolk Community College.

I’m open for suggestions…perhaps you know a good location here in Suffolk County for this conference. Perhaps you know some stand-up comedians who can perform at this conference. Perhaps you know some actors who would like to perform Hamlet’s soliloquy. Perhaps you know someone who can give a workshop….

Mindy Kronenberg: Is an educator with Empire State College, an award-winning poet, and scriptwriter for television and stage. She’s given many workshops on creative writing, especially through BACCA (Babylon Arts Council – (631) 661-7558). Professor Kronenberg has managed her own conferences for the printed word and has recently attended the Writers’ Conference at Stony Brook University in the Wang Center.

Bradley Thunderbird Phoenix: African American & Native writer-producer-actor-director of audio short stories (audio plays & skits) of various genres (Twilight Zone-type plays, suspense, science fiction, mystery, horror, and drama). Mr. Phoenix’s audio plays have aired on WUSB, WBAI, WBIX, and Canadian radio stations. His plays have been performed on stage at SUNY Stony Brook, Borders Bookstore in Farmingdale, NY, and the Huntington Public Library, Huntington, NY. He has written
over 100 original scripts (including audio plays, radio promos, public service announcements, and radio commercials).
