Abolitionists:
New evidence has emerged confirming the innocence of Cameron Willingham, put to
death by lethal injection in 2004, the same year New York declared its death
penalty unconstitutional.(See Bob Herbert’s article below). Once again, we are
given a harrowing reminder that such a fatally flawed, unjust, and inhuman
system must never be allowed to return to New York State.
To this end, NYADP again launches its Fall series of speaking and educational
events about the death penalty, including screenings of exoneree Juan
Melendez’s new documentary, featured at the Latino Film Festival. Contact
Colleen at Colleen.Eren (at) gmail.com to host a screening or speaking
engagement!
In solidarity,
Colleen
Innocent but Dead
By BOB HERBERT
There is a long and remarkable article in the current New Yorker about a man who was executed in Texas in 2004 for deliberately setting a fire that killed his three small children. Rigorous scientific analysis has since shown that there was no evidence that the fire in a one-story, wood frame house in Corsicana was the result of arson, as the authorities had alleged.
