Tonight was not a full moon. A scan of internet sites tells me that the full moon will be on Sunday. (Sun. Feb 28, 2010 at 16:38). Though, tonight’s moon was beautiful and powerful.
At 4:00 in the morning, it not only called Ian and I from bed, it also woke the neighbors. (And I don’t think it was us who woke them, because when we had just walked into the living room, we heard the friendly, though robotic, AOL “Good-bye”, from the man who lives on the other side of the wall.)
Watching the moon, from our apartment window, with Ian, and with the presence of the man on the other side of the wall, and with the cough of the woman underneath us, gave me an insight that is the beginning of a poem:
Winter Evening, Barreling Towards Spring
The moon wasn’t trying to drive lonely people crazy.
The moon was calling people to come together,
seeking union.
So, if you were selfish and watched her alone,
or, too stubborn to woo a lover to stand with,
it’s your own fault for going mad.
