The Green Party of New York State regained automatic ballot status by getting over 50,000 votes for their Governor candidate in 2010. Look for us soon on your voter registration form and your ballot.

Gaining ballot status enables the Green Party to run more peace candidates, more single-payer candidates, more anti-fracking candidates, and more sustainable energy candidates.

Ralph Nader: 25th anniversary of the nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl, Ukraine

The ability of corporate science and its regulatory apologists to inflict sanctions on dissenters is legion. There is a long history of censorship leading to self-censorship by those who otherwise might have applied Alfred North Whitehead’s characterization of science as “keeping open options for revision” to the ideology of atomic power. I call for an [...]

Video: Spring Swan

This Swan, moving through the water on a gray day, reminds me of the capricious way that Spring has unfolded here on Long Island this year. Contradictory, but satisfying, with the beauty being worth the wait. This footage was taken at Southards Pond in Babylon.

Celebrations and protests of the royal wedding…

For folks who want to complain about the royal wedding, or listen to the concerns of (English) Republicans, I found an interesting article at the Guardian UK. It also points to the “Salford Star” as a place to find anti-wedding messages (and the comment feed from the Salford Star is quite cranky…) (excerpt from) The [...]

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit today upheld a preliminary injunction barring enforcement of an ordinance in Oyster Bay, Long Island that violates day laborers’ core constitutional right to free speech. As a result of the ruling, day laborers whose livelihoods were threatened because of the ordinance can continue to exercise their First Amendment rights [...]

NAACP urges action for Troy Davis

From an NAACP e-mail action alert: There isn’t much time. This is truly a matter of life and death. Troy Davis could be executed as early as next month, even though seven of the nine witnesses recanted their statements and the alleged murder weapon still has not been found. Last week, I sent the email [...]

Some women’s history: Lady Hamilton movie and exhibit

Emma, Lady Hamilton is a complicated and important figure from the Regency period. She was a cultural figure and diplomat. History remembers her for many of her controversies, including being the lover of British naval hero Lord Nelson. There is currently an exhibit about Lady Hamilton at a book club in New York city. More [...]

Gene Sharp: The Rediscovery of Nonviolent Action (via Secrecy {Book})

I planned to have this short essay on Gene Sharp’s work on nonviolent action posted during the drama of the Egyptian revolution. Life got in the way, so I stayed tuned to media accounts all the while thinking how "the story" was only partly told. The New York Times assessed Sharp’s influence on pro-democracy movements [...]

The chemicals were used by companies during a drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking, which involves the high-pressure injection of [...]
