WASHINGTON, DC — Green Party leaders said that the narrow range of disagreement between President Obama and Gov. Romney exhibited during the three debates proved that it’s time for a voters’ rebellion.

Spend a few minutes watching the presidential debates which include Green nominee Jill Stein, and it becomes obvious that the limited spectrum of ideas offered by Obama and Romney are not serving the American people,” said Steve Welzer, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States .

Two-party rule has failed. A strong showing for Dr. Stein and other Green candidates on Election Day will prove that there’s a real interest in Green ideas instead of the tired pro-war, pro-Wall Street policies of the Democratic and Republican parties. A few Greens in Congress would change the entire political landscape — Democrats and Republicans would no longer be each others’ sole competition. With Dr. Stein and running mate Cheri Honkala on 85% of ballots, voters have a real choice in 2012,” said Mr. Welzer, who is also a member of the Green Party of New Jersey Council.

Greens encouraged voters to learn about the Green New Deal (http://www.jillstein.org/green_new_deal) promoted by Dr. Stein as an alternative to the policies of the two old-party candidates, which serve to redistribute wealth from the middle-class and poor to the One Percent.

The Green New Deal puts forth a plan to fight global climate change and stimulate the U.S. economy by putting 25 million Americans to work by generating Green jobs in conservation, development of safe and clean energy technologies, conversion from our current fossil-fuel economy, and retrofitting homes, buildings, communities, and transportation systems for energy efficiency.

“Obama and Romney don’t deserve votes, they deserve widespread voter anger,” said Starlene Rankin, co-chair of the Green Party’s Lavender Caucus. “Neither addressed the needs of working people and the poor. There was no call for a halt to foreclosures or punishment of too-big-to-fail Wall Street firms that caused the 2008 financial disaster and put millions out of work. These firms needed to be broken up, not bailed out. There was no mention in the debates of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a job-killing trade pact negotiated in secret by the Obama Administration. Obama and Romney both support it. They also agree on cutting Social Security, which will force people to invest their retirement savings in the Wall Street casino.”

“The drug war’s failure, mass incarceration in the prison industrial complex, and devastating effect of both on black, brown, and poor communities were completely missing from the Obama-Romney debates. Medicare For All? Public works projects to employ millions of Americans and restore economic security? Off the table. Hydrofracking and mountaintop detonation mining and the threats they pose to public health? No debate. Poverty? Not one mention,” Ms. Rankin said.

Green Party leaders noted that even when they differ on specific policies, President Obama and Gov. Romney base their positions on the same premises.

Obama in his first term proved that he embraces the neocon Bush-Cheney doctrine of military preemption, license for U.S. attack on any country in the world, and disregard for international law, Both Obama and Romney favor more civilian-killing drone warfare. Meanwhile, the greatest threat to global security in 21st century — climate change — was never mentioned during the debates. Neither admits that the deficit is caused by borrowing and spending for wars, the bloated military budget, and tax breaks for the One Percent.

President Obama’s proud claim that he called U.S. troops home from Iraq doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. He tried to ignore President Bush’s timetable and delay troop withdrawal, until Iraq forced his hand by refusing to sign the ‘Status of Forces’ agreement.

The three Obama-Romney debates were sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). The CPD is owned and operated by the Democratic and Republican parties and their corporate sponsors, for the purpose of limiting the stage to their own candidates. The League of Women Voters has called this situation “a fraud on the American Voter.”
