Richie Havens, Rest in Peace

Richie Havens passed away on April 22, 2013. Rest in peace, Richie Havens.

Dear Richie,

English: Richie Havens Live, Musikhalle Hambur...

Richie Havens

The loss of your bright shining heart and soul from our world is a shock.  I realized that I had seen you perform four times.  More than I have seen any other nationally touring performer.

I first saw you at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, NY when I was barely out of college.  My best friend had gotten concert tickets from his older brother.  His brother decided he didn’t want to go to see some oldies acts.  We were psyched to see Country Joe and the Fish.   We reveled in his famous anti-war song.  Joe was fun.  We stayed to see the next act that — in our ignorance — we had never heard of.  We figured we were there anyway.  Why not give you a listen?

You blew us through the doors

EFF: Congress Shamefully Passes CISPA; Stop US Senate

from the Electronic Freedom Foundation

U.S. House of Representatives Shamefully Passes CISPA;

Internet Freedom Advocates Prepare for a Battle in the Senate

CISPA - The solution is the problem

CISPA – The solution is the problem (Photo credit: DonkeyHotey)

Today, Internet freedom advocates everywhere turned their eyes to the U.S. House of Representatives as that legislative body considered the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act.

For the second year in a row,  the House voted to approve CISPA, a bill that would allow companies to bypass all existing privacy law to spy on communications and pass sensitive user data to the government.  EFF condemns the vote in the House and vows to continue the fight in the Senate.

“CISPA is a poorly drafted bill that would provide a gaping exception to bedrock privacy law,” EFF Senior Staff Attorney Kurt Opsahl said. “While we all agree that our nation needs to address pressing Internet security issues, this bill sacrifices online privacy while failing to take common-sense steps to improve security.”

The legislation passed 288-127, despite a veto threat from Pres. Barack Obama, who expressed serious concerns about the danger CISPA poses to civil liberties.  Read more »

Mic Check: NYC pays for destruction of Occupy Library

The People's Library Sign At Occupy Wall StreetWe celebrate the news in The Village Voice article, City Settles Lawsuit Over The Destruction of the Occupy Wall Street Library showing that the Occupy movement received some measure of justice for the wanton destruction of their community.

Occupy Wall Street claimed $47,000 in damages  [for the loss of books and computers], all of which the city agreed to pay today.

. . . The city also agrees to pay $75,000 for the destruction of property of Global Revolutions TV, a media outfit that was active in the park, along with $49,850 in lawyers fees and costs, as well as $8,500 to Times Up New York, who lost bicycle generators in the raid.

As we have posted here previously, we donated supplies directly to Occupy Wall Street, including books for the library.  We are heartened to see that our donation was not completely lost in the destruction of #OWS (which destruction was nationally orchestrated by the Obama administration.) A song of peace: Dedicated to the Boston community

Reflecting on the people hurt and traumatized at the Boston Marathon bombing. Sending out loving thoughts to the families of those who lost their lives.

A soothing children’s song about peace in the world:

Little Drops of Water” was the Peace Song of the Day at our Peace Couple website for April 23rd of last year. It is a traditional song from England. I first discovered this song in the collection, Singing Bee!, compiled by Jane Hart.

I also wrote my own verse for this song which clearly states the need for “peace”. Below my video are other versions and resources for the “Little Drops of Water” song.

Jail the STAR Tax Thieves

Tax

Tax (Photo credit: 401(K) 2013)

The New York State Comptroller recently reported that our state is losing millions in tax dollars due to fraudulent tax exemptions under the STAR program:

Auditors estimate these exemptions cost New York State $13 million during the 2010-11 fiscal year and could top $73 million by the 2015-16 fiscal year.

The STAR tax exemption is designed to only cover 1 property per person since it has to be their principal residence:

New York’s STAR program provides a partial exemption from school taxes for most owner-occupied, primary residences. Basic STAR exemptions are available for an owner-occupied, primary residence where the income of owners and their spouses totals less than $500,000.  . . . Property owners are eligible for one exemption for a primary residence only.

It is true that some exemptions may be accidental such as when the owner dies, but some of the exemptions found were from duplicate filings:

Auditors found the majority of duplicate exemptions involved individuals who received exemptions for property that was not their primary residence or was seasonal property. Read more »

Green Council candidate Redd demands halt to DC school closings

Green Party e-mail, as posted at Independent Political Report:

Stop No. 2 on the “Roc 4 Redd” outreach tour, featuring “Mayor of DC Hip-Hop” Head-Roc: 15th and L Streets NW (in front of the Post building), noon to 2 pm on Thursday, April 4; At-Large Council candidate Redd presses for a halt on plan to close 15 public schools in DC

Stop No. 3 on the tour: Outside of the Anacostia Metro Station, Thursday, April 4, 5 to 7 pm

WASHINGTON, DC — At-Large City Council candidate Perry Redd (http://www.redd4council.com) sharply criticized plans to close public schools and said today that he will take this message to the doorstep of The Washington Post on Thursday, April 4 in his second “Roc 4 Redd” campaign outreach tour appearance.

“It’s a shock that I’m the only candidate in the special election who is calling for a moratorium on school closings and no further expansion of charters,” said Perry Redd. “The giveaway of public properties to private corporations amounts to public theft — robbery of our children in the case of public schools.” Read more »

Green Party challenges Obama Corruption on Keystone XL Pipeline

Green Party challenges Keystone XL pipeline conflict of interest in US State Dept. consultant’s environmental impact statement

• Green Party notes recent pipeline ruptures, including Friday’s Canadian crude-oil spill in Arkansas

TKeystone XL demonstration, White House,8-23-20...he Green Party of the United States has sent the U.S. State Department a strongly worded objection to TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline. The letter, appended below, cites environmental concerns as well as the conflict of interest that compromises the draft environmental impact statement on which the Obama Adminstration may base its decision on the pipeline.  The statement, prepared by fossil fuel consultant Environmental Resources Management, was paid for by TransCanada, a probable violation of legal and ethical standards.

The letter to the State Department, which mentions a July 2011 ExxonMobil pipeline rupture that dumped 63,000 gallons of Canadian crude oil into the Yellowstone River in Montana, was sent just as news was breaking on Friday’s ExxonMobil spill in Mayflower, Arkansas, after a pipeline carrying Canadian crude oil ruptured (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57577164/homes-evacuated-after-exxonmobil-oil-pipeline-spill-in-arkansas/).

The Green Party has taken a strong stand against the tar-sands oil pipelines: see “Green Party urges national protest against the proposed Keystone XL and Trailbreaker pipelines” (January 31, 2013, http://www.gp.org/press/pr-national.php?ID=583) and “Greens to participate in the Feb. 17 protest in DC against the Keystone XL Pipeline, after the Green Party endorses the event” (February 13, 2013, http://www.gp.org/press/pr-national.php?ID=588).   Read more »

Political surprises in Amityville

Amityville Village recently held their local elections. For those of you who know me, you are probably aware that I am always a little interested in what happens to the characters over in Amityville. -KW

Amityville Village held their 2013 elections for Mayor and Trustees.

Of three people running for Mayor, the winner was a newcomer to the board. He defeated two other people, both of whom were trustees.

Peter Casserly was a trustee, with time left in his term. Now that he has lost for Mayor, Peter Casserly has resigned as trustee, saying he wants to let the new Mayor fulfill his mandate. Peter Casserly was supported by Suffolk Democratic Party leader Richard Schaffer. Some people may know Peter Casserly from his tenure in the Town of Babylon Zoning Department, and Casserly’s handing of cell tower placement.

It is all very interesting.
