News from the Edgewood Preserve

Edgewood PreserveSpring Cocktail Party Fundraiser Canceled
A reminder that the cocktail party scheduled for this Wednesday, May 18, has been canceled.  We are now getting a lot of last minute calls and e-mails about folks looking forward to the party.  Unfortunately, we did not get enough responders (either through rsvp, phone or payment) and we had to cancel the evening.  If you know of someone who is not on our e-mail list who may have received an invitation and was/is planning to attend, please let them know that the event is canceled.
Screening of “Trashed” this Friday at 1pm at the Deer Park Library
We will be showing this timely film about the garbage crisis in America.  Free.  Film is only 77 minutes — come check it out.
URGENT — Here We Go Again!  S2734 Advances to Senate Floor…
Legislation to transfer Pilgrim parcel to Edgewood Preserve made it out of the Finance Committe in the Senate.  Now we wait for it to advance to the Senate floor for a full vote.  The companion bill (A3836) in the Assembly is still in the Tourism, Parks committee.  If you care about the future of our groundwater, open space and wild habitats, please call or e-mail Assembly Steve Englebright (chair of the committee) and kindly ask him to move the bill out of committee and to do all he can to advance bill A3836  to the Assembly floor for a vote.  Let him know that this bill is important to you.  We only have a month left to get the bills to the Senate and Assembly floors!  Please help, it will take just a few minutes to call or e-mail Assemblyman Englebright, but preservation of our groundwater and habitats lasts forever!
Phone on Long Island:  631-751-3094
Phone in Albany:  518-455-4804
I will be sending another e-mail about just this legislation shortly.  But in the meantime, please call or e-mail Assemblyman Englebright.  He is a supporter and a sponsor of this legislation so be nice!  Just urge him to get the bill moving.  Thank you — please do not delay!
Help Needed with Native Plant/Educational Gardens at Edgewood, June 5, 9:30 to 12:30pm.
On Sunday, June 5, in honor of World Environment Day, we will begin work on the fenced areas in the parking lot.  On Earth Day our wonderful volunteers cut, dug and pulled mugwort and then covered the areas to prevent the weeds from growing back.  On June 5, we will turn over the dirt and plant some native grasses and flowers purchased from the Long Island Native Plant Initiative based in Riverhead.  These are big areas and we will likely need a few additional work days, but we hope to get a good chunk of the work done on June 5.  There are three areas and we need at least 8-10 persons per area (the more the better).  Families, students, gardeners and scouts — we need you!  Please consider helping with this wonderful project — has taken many years to get this going.
We will also need a few folks to help us weed these areas as the summer progresses and to water the areas initially until the plants become rooted and comfortable in their new home.  One good person has volunteered already — thank you Roseanne!
Field Work Continues
If anyone would like to help Patricia in the field a few hours a week to dig mugwort, please let her know. The good news is that a large area that was tarped last year has not grown back with the same vigor and in one entire area, it has not grown back at all.  This is really encouraging.  It is quite overwhelming when one is in the field, surrounded by what looks like acres of mugwort, but as the saying goes — keep calm and carry on.  We will not get all the mugwort dug before it gets too hot (and before Patricia takes her much needed respite for the month of August), but inch by inch, we will restore this field to what it should be and what it once was.
Trail Work
The West Babylon Troop did a great job on their trail.  The Block Family will soon be working on their trail — The Pretty Path, and Mary Beth and Paul Tomko will cover the Blueberry Trail.    On a recent hike we led for Deer Park library members, we came upon a gorgeous patch of bird’s foot violet along the fire trail (site of the 2006 brush fire).  It was a very happy sighting, since this plant is considered endangered on Long Island.
We still need help with a few more trails. If you would like to help in this way, please let us know.  We provide gloves, bags, pruners and guidance.
Have a great week.
