Poet Walt Whitman’s Birthday is Thurs 5/31: Celebrate in Silence

Walt Whitman is one of my favorite poets. I like to remember his birthday, which is on May 31st, and falls on a Thursday this year. There are some events and celebrations around this time at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in Long Island. And, my idea for a holiday to this beloved, transcendentalist, nature poet [...]

Children’s author Maurice Sendak dies at age 83

“Thanks for the magic.” The NY Times reports: “Maurice Sendak, widely considered the most important children’s book artist of the 20th century, who wrenched the picture book out of the safe, sanitized world of the nursery and plunged it into the dark, terrifying and hauntingly beautiful recesses of the human psyche, died on Tuesday in [...]

Amen, Revolujah!” Reverend Billy Looks Forward to Spring Video posted on the front page of OccupyWallSt.org Late December will never be about shopping [...]

Please check out “Sonny Meadows Week” at Peace Couple (plus, quiz at bottom of this post)

As many of you know, Sonny Meadows is a local musician and activist, here on Long Island, New York. The Wilders have admired his work — and his many solo performances and band performances — over the years. With the advent of the occupy movement, it seems to us that Sonny’s music about injustice, social [...]

Help save Brontë’s 1830 version of “Mad Magazine” for the public

KW writes: For all of us Jane Eyre and Charlotte Bronte fans, this tiny book is a rare find! Written when Bronte was only 14 years old, it is a brilliant piece of satire. Bronte created this tiny work in the format of a men’s magazine. It includes a witty ad (see below), which observes [...]

Santana is Booed for Using Baseballs Civil Rights Game to Speak Out for Civil Rights

But Bud picked the wrong Latino. Carlos Santana took the microphone and said that he was representing all immigrants. Then Santana added, “The people of Arizona, and the people of Atlanta, Georgia, you should be ashamed of yourselves.” In a perfect display of Gov. Nathan Deal’s Georgia, the cheers quickly turned to boos. Yes, Carlos [...]

Flip sides: Poetry, War and Peace

Last month, we posted an open letter from Maxwell Corydon Wheat, Jr., a poet of the peace community, who asked that President Obama read poetry before any discussions of military strategy. Max believes that this would help impress upon leaders the cost of war, and lead us towards peace. In sharing Max’s thoughts, a friend [...]
