Help save Brontë’s 1830 version of “Mad Magazine” for the public

KW writes: For all of us Jane Eyre and Charlotte Bronte fans, this tiny book is a rare find! Written when Bronte was only 14 years old, it is a brilliant piece of satire. Bronte created this tiny work in the format of a men’s magazine. It includes a witty ad (see below), which observes […]

You can find a copy: here. Over one hundred women lent their hands to this project. Women’s hands are photographed holding […]

US House passes health care bill: Includes amendment that oppresses women

Two stories: A health care bill [Affordable Health Care for America Act, HR 3962] has passed the House of Representatives, which is supposed to offer some hope for health care reform. And, some people are shocked with an amendment about abortion in the bill which The Center for Reproductive Rights is calling a “stunning assault […]

Caster Semenya: Sports, gender identity, privacy

Quick summary: When track athlete Caster Semenya started standing out as a competitor, and as someone who looks different, The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) asked her to submit to a gender test. The testing takes awhile, so it was an ongoing controversy as Semenya won a gold medal. My thoughts: It is an […]

NOW supports Sarah Palin

I just cannot believe that of all the problems in the world – including the sexist Republicans in the NY State Senate collaborating with Hiram Monserrate who is facing domestic violence charges – that the National Organization for Women (NOW) has decided to do an action alert against late night comedian David Letterman. Here are […]

David Letterman and Hiram Monserrate: The Republicans have got to be kidding

What? Republican debutante Sarah Palin wants David Letterman to apologize for making a sexual joke ALLEGEDLY about her 14-year-old daughter? (Even though, we all know it was about her 18-year-old daughter, who clearly has experienced sex, and whom Sarah Palin paraded around the campaign trail as an unmarried, pregnant teen, exposing her to the attention […]

re: Tom Golisano and his cohorts in the coup to take over the NY State Senate You know, Tom Golisano has exposed himself, more than he could ever imagine. Because, he is part of a group of people who just do not get it. Golisano is now being clear that he thinks that charges of […]

Alicia Keys has some fan club!

KW: Old folkie that I am, I don’t follow new music much. But, I went to look up Alicia Keys because Steve Nicks dedicated a song to her in Long Island this weekend. Ian told me I am behind the times, because Bob Dylan wrote Alicia Keys into a song. Found an awesome video, Superwoman, […]

Video by Benazir Bhutto’s daughter

Benazir Bhutto was a woman leader in Pakistan. She was assassinated in December of 2007, shortly after another incident where her entourage was bombed. I cannot find it in the archives, though, I heard an interesting piece about her on Democracy Now!, about how she was not always a perfect politician, though more and more […]

Review of “The Duchess” Book, Movie and DVD

KW: My favorite hobby — reading, re-reading, watching, studying and talking about The Duchess — is currently de la mode. In fact, Ralph Fiennes, who plays the Duke to Kiera Knightley’s  Duchess, is in the mix for a possible Golden Globe and a possible Oscar. As my review notes, I enjoyed Ralph Fiennes’ performance, though, […]

I read the biography, Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire, by Amanda Foreman back in 2006, and have been excited about Georgiana’s life story ever since. The new blog is called, “Georgiana Circle: Women Healing History.” It already contains content about: Georgiana’s […]

Bad bras…good bras

KW: Some items from Victoria’s Secret seem to be making women sick. See better places to buy bras below. Buying an organic cotton bra, and bras that do not push and pinch as much can be good for your health. Hope that the Victoria’s Secret incident opens peoples’ minds to the fact that shoppers should […]
