Dr. Jill Stein, running for president as a Green Party candidate, said if elected she would honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’ s legacy by not only embracing his call for civil rights and racial equality but continuing his struggle for peace, economic justice and universal health care. Dr. Stein, a graduate of Harvard Medical School, said she would [...]

Occupy Wall Street (NYC) MLK Day Events

OCCUPY WALL STREET RECLAIMS THE DREAM: CONTINUING MARTIN LUTHER KING’S FIGHT FOR ECONOMIC JUSTICE On the eve of his assassination, Martin Luther King launched a campaign against economic injustice, calling for an encampment on the lawns of Washington D.C. — much like the Occupy encampments across the country today. On January 16th, Occupy Wall Street [...]

Martin Luther King events with Occupy Wall Street

Dr. King said “A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth. With righteous indignation, it will look across the seas and say: ‘This is not just.’” Occupy Wall Street resonates with the vision of Dr.  Martin Luther King. There are many occupy events in New York [...]

Ben Jealous, the world will remember that you put petty partisan politics above the life of Troy Davis.

IW:  I tried to reply to an email from NAACP President/CEO Ben Jealous titled, “The World Will Remember Troy Davis.” Unsurprisingly, the email it was sent from does not allow for replies.  Below is what I wanted to tell Mr. Jealous: The world will remember that you, Ben Jealous, put petty partisan politics above the [...]

MLK quote was real enough! Don’t let the haters take the message away…

Somehow, those of us who believe in peace are easily shamed and/or thwarted by the right-wing. Don’t let them take away the energy of Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachings, or our grace in eschewing hatred, just by saying that we got a quote wrong. Martin Luther King, Jr. did say:

MLK to O: We Must End Our Violence Abroad and At-Home

Ian writes: Today’s shooting in Arizona of Congresswoman Giffords is an awful reminder of why violence is not the answer to political disagreements.  Dr. King was widely criticized, including on the editorial pages of the New York Times, for broadening his speeches from only violence at home to include  violence abroad. In a famous speech, [...]

The War Machine has sprung forward…spring back…

The following demonstrations were called with the purpose of protesting FBI raids on peace activists which appear to be a government action to stifle dissent. Note that over the weekend, NATO did air strikes in Pakistan. It appears that the war machine is taking steps forward. It would be good for the peace movement to [...]

Happy Martin Luther King Day

KW: Though we honor the work of Martin Luther King, we are not doing a lot to celebrate this year. (Well, actually doing some “peace work”, and I hope that counts.) Tried to find a useful website for a mini-celebration on-line. The Seattle Times has a pretty cool archive set up about the life of [...]

from DemocracyNow.org from Newly Formed 150,000-Strong Nurses’ Union Pushes for Single-Payer Healthcare At the healthcare summit itself, initially not a single advocate for single-payer healthcare was invited. Congress member John Conyers is the sponsor HR 676, legislation that seeks to create a single-payer program. But when Conyers directly asked President Obama at a Congressional Black [...]
