Green Party of Suffolk Calls For End to Bullying of the Homeless

Green Party of SuffolkThe Green Party of Suffolk calls for the prosecution of Suffolk County Leg. John H. Kennedy (R-Hauppauge) under New York State anti-bullying laws, for his ostracization of homeless school children in his district.  Leg. Kennedy’s actions remind the Green Party of the atmosphere of hate that was created against Latinos in Suffolk County, by former County Executive Steve Levy (D/R), which ultimately led to violence.

Kennedy has been leading a witch hunt against innocent school children in his district, simply because of their housing status.  He has failed to recognize that these children, and their parents, are also his constituents who he is required to represent.  It is Kennedy’s job ensure that these children enjoy their legal right to a public education.

Kennedy presents the strawman argument that home-owning parents in the district are making a complaint against these children.  This argument is hollow, because it fails to recognize that all property owners in a school district — regardless of their familial status — pay school taxes to educate all children within the district.

Suffolk County Legislative candidate William Stevenson (G -15th Dist.) stated that: “Actions like these are outright offenses to human dignity.  It’s sad to see our elected leaders taking steps which encourage their constituents to be at odds with one another.  In Suffolk County, we need a government that embraces – or at least permits – diversity of cultural background and social status.  Legislator Kennedy is going in completely the opposite direction.  He’s demonstrating the age old habit of politicians giving special attention to the concerns of their wealthier, property-owning constituents, at the expense of the needy.’  Read more »

I have no kids, and I want my tax dollars used to educate homeless children

Ian sent the following to Newsday to publish.  He has not heard back from them yet.

Newsday

There were two articles recently in Newsday that signal a dangerous dehumanization of the homeless.  The article which appeared today has the headline “Some parents object to more homeless kids in Hauppauge school” [September 18, 2013]. The headline is misleading because no actual Hauppauge parents are quoted in the article as objecting.

Only Legis. John Kennedy (R-Nesconset), is quoted claiming that some un-named parents complained to him.  Kennedy’s credibility takes an even bigger hit because he doesn’t seem to understand how school taxes work.  He states that taxpaying parents have the right to question whether other people’s children should be educated in their district.  I have news for Mr. Kennedy: everyone pays schools taxes, whether they have children or not.  That means that everyone in the community has equal say in how the schools are run.  Taxpaying parents have no greater say in how the money is used than any other person in the district.  If someone in the community is not a parent or a taxpayer, they still have an equal say.

As a taxpayer without children, I declare that I want my school tax dollars earmarked exclusively to educate homeless children. As a taxpayer without children, I am told by taxpaying parents that I should cheerfully pay school taxes to support our community. After all, I am told, I will want to live, and grow old, with those around me as best educated as possible.  I agree with that.  Well, those parents can’t have it both ways.  If I am supporting the community — then that means all the children in the community — not just those with the benefits of a stable home.  Read more »

Two stories about bad policing in the news today: Do we need the police?

The LA Times reports that in North Carolina, a man was killed by police after seeking help for having been in a car accident. The man’s name is Jonathan Ferrell, and he was a former football player for  Florida A&M University.

The same day, The New York Post reports that police shot two innocent women bystanders, while trying to subdue an emotionally disturbed man who was interfering with traffic on Broadway. (The two women were treated in the hospital for injuries.)

A question for all of us: Do we have such a need for traffic to flow smoothly, that we need police to start shooting people in the road, instead of blocking off the road and negotiating with them?

And, some bigger questions…

Should police have guns? Do we even need police? Do we need separate, specifically-trained police to deal with the mentally ill?

I am reposting an essay I wrote on this topic awhile back…

What If There Were No Police?
Moving past the failed institution of “the police”

Changes at Wilderside

Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire: Ultimate Fan GuideNo, not personnel changes at onthewilderside, com  You still have the same two irascible co-editors sharing the driving.  (And occasionally both grabbing for the steering wheel at the same time.)

Making peace with the March on Washington 2013

8/30/13 Update: Ian was hoping that former President Carter’s speech would be a ray of truth in a celebration full of carefully scripted platitudes.  Carter did mention the the over-incarceration of African-American males in the US and the need for DC statehood.  He did not mention the injustices of the current administration, including the constant drumbeat of war and extra-judicial drone killings.

The March on Washington 2013 is an exciting event, which will feature many worthy issues. And, the march celebrates such a great hero of peace and nonviolence.

The Wilders, though, have had some trouble getting enthused about the march. The march will feature many lukewarm, sold-out, Democratic officials, who are more of the problem than the solution. In addition, the message of “anti-war” has been kept in the shadows by the organizing frenzy and the media.

Because of the good issues being featured, we kind of stayed quiet with our critique during the lead-up. But, hey, the big event is nearly over. As radical, nonviolent activists, we need to vent a bit… Read more »

Long Islanders: Watch Perseid Meteor shower on 8/11/13 at state parks

A multicolored Perseid meteor striking the sky...

Archival photo of a Perseid meteor striking the sky just to the right from Milky Way. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Long Islanders: The Perseid Meteor showers will peak in the sky over your home on the nights of Sunday (into Monday), August 11th and Monday, August 12th. The best time to view from Long Island will be about 11pm to 6am, with the show starting to get good around midnight.

It is best to get away from city lights. So, if you are on Long Island, consider finding a New York State Park to view from. The Wilders will pick a park and watch tonight. The Wilders will try to watch from their backyard. Maybe we will have a good picture to share tomorrow!

___________________________

Update after 10pm: Because it is expected to be cloudy on Long Island tonight, it might not be that great a view. If you decide to watch in a low-key way, here is a link to the weather channel post with the NASA live feed link of the meteor shower:

____________________________

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that several Long Island State Parks will remain open during the nighttime hours for viewing of the Perseids Meteor Shower on the evening of Sunday August 11, 2013. Peak viewing times are 11:00PM, Sunday, August 11 until dawn the next morning.

There will be no charge and the normal star gazing permit will not be required. You must remain near your vehicle.

We suggest that you dress appropriately, bring bug spray, and a chair that reclines. Binoculars are not necessary. Look towards the northeast and enjoy the celestial show.

State Parks that will remain open for viewing are:
• Jones Beach State Park – West End II
• Gov. Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park – Field 3
• Montauk Point State Park – Upper Parking Lot
• Robert Moses State Park – Field 2
