Video of Long Island Noreaster: November 7, 2012

Long Island is still recuperating from the Frankenstorm, Hurricane Sandy. Today and tonight we are experiencing a nor’easter snowstorm — this early in November, and the day after election day! This is a little surreal. And Climate Change is a little too real.

Archival Video: Crazy weather-extremes stories from days gone by are included in this humorous video, “Not Just A Snow Globe”, below… Read more »

Election Results: Third Party, New York, Suffolk County focus

Jan 2013 Update:
Best link for third party results for Presidential Race 2013 is at
Independent Political Report: here.

Nader Debate in DC
Election links and results presented in a fairly random manner. Ian is registered Green Party. And, we are both third party activists from Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. So, that sways our presentation!

For great and detailed state-by-state charts, which include third party totals, go to Politico: here. Or, try Google‘s results page: here (You have to click on “show all candidates”).

For Green Party results and victory anecdotes, go to Green Party Watch: here.

Jill Stein, Green Party candidate for President is reported at about .3% (point three percent) nationwide at Google. (I expect this and other third party numbers to go up as vote totals are reported). Jill Stein received about .4% in Suffolk. Gary Johnson, Libertarian Party candidate for President is reported at a little over 1% nationwide.

You may know that the media has called the race for Barack Obama as winner. (Watch the sky folks, duck those drones.)

We will post various updates at this post throughout the morning (before work, during the buildup to the oncoming Nor’Easter).

Here are some fun results below: Percentages for New York State, Green Party, Congressional candidates. I am guessing that the tallies, and maybe even the percentages may go up as more results come in. Traditionally, the Board of Elections Workers are not as careful about reporting third party votes. And, in addition, Hurricane Sandy made voting in NYC and Long Island very difficult and wrought with paper ballots. So, in New York, I think we won’t have every vote counted for weeks.

One stand-out result in New York is Ursual Rozum for Congress on the Green Party line: She received 7.9%. That is an excellent showing for a third party candidate.

Looks like 2 Independents Elected to the US Senate

Former Maine Governor Angus King

Former Maine Governor Angus King (Photo credit: CurtFletcher)

The news agencies are calling the election results in Vermont for Bernie Sanders and in Maine for Angus King. There were also 4 other candidates in the Vermont race and the Maine Race.  I am not particularly happy about how the results are being resported for non-corporate candidates.  They are hard to find, and often party affiliations are missing.

Election Night musings and links

2012 Suffolk County Election Results at the Board of Elections: here

Voting is brisk on Long Island. At the left is a photo of our polling place in Babylon. It was more crowded than we had ever seen it. The lines were long for most ED’s, but at least inside the door. The election workers said that there were only tables for our regular Election Districts, but there were extra people because a lot of displaced voters came to vote there.

Suffolk County Board of Elections is wrongly rejecting registrations from the DMV/ Department of Motor Vehicles sign-ups.

Governor Cuomo made a last minute process that displace voters could go to other polls. That move will create lots of paper ballots, and lots of confusion. Our guess is that no one will be able to “call” or “guess” the outcome of the New York elections.

There are early returns in states where voting has closed. Mitt Romney won Kentucky and West Virginia. Barack Obama won Vermont. All of those were expected results. As of 8:40pm, someone on Democracy Now! says that some folks are predicting Obama will win, based on the returns and info coming in.

NYCLU & Community Groups Criticize Suffolk County for Rejecting Online Voter Registration Applications

NYCLUNovember 6, 2012 – The New York Civil Liberties Union today condemned the Suffolk County Board of Election’s unlawful policy of rejecting valid voter registration applications submitted through the New York DMV’s online system.

“The online registration system was established to help enable New Yorkers to go to the polls,” NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman said. “The Suffolk County Board of Elections’ unconscionable refusal to accept these online applications has effectively stripped New Yorkers of their voting rights.  State and county officials must act to ensure that anyone disenfranchised by this policy has their voting rights restored in time to cast a ballot today.”  Read more »

Cataclysmic NY election/polling place news

(Corrected to clarify which NY voters qualify)

Governor Cuomo has made an executive order that New York voters in federally-declared disaster counties may vote for President and statewide office at any NY polling place they like.

But…

There is a big problem.  Those voters could be giving up their right to vote for local races. They will vote by affidavit ballot, and it will only count for races which are the same as in their regular polling place. [So, be sure that if you use this option, you find a polling place as close to home as possible. And, if a certain candidate or campaign is important to you, make sure you go to a polling place in that district.]

Should someone responsible (independent, activist, etc) be helping figure this out and shape the rules better? Read more »

Hurricane Sandy: Trees down at North Babylon High School

Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island hard. North Babylon is not a shore community. Still, the wind knocked down trees and caused damage. Below is a video, photo, and photo album link, for trees that were down at North Babylon High School on Deer Park Avenue. As of Wednesday, many of the branches were cleaned up.
