Tuesday morning, Oct 30th update: Reports say 1/2 of all LIPA/Long Island Power Authority customers lost power. We have half-power again, after losing all power for awhile. Government and local paper telling people to stay indoors due to downed trees and power lines. Worried about some family in the city. Phone is out, so communications difficult. The wind has died down tremendously. Some folks are walking about outside. Though, a tree branch still partially blocks our doorway.

Hurricane Sandy: Tree branches down
Hurricane Sandy update: It is about 8:20pm (Monday, 10/29). We are in North Babylon, Long Island, New York. Our home is a few blocks north of Sunrise Highway/Route 27. So, we have not experienced so much flooding. We are dealing with lots and lots of wind. A tree came down on the roof of our apartment building, and the one next door in our courtyard. It is blocking our front door (shared by other apartments), so I am a little nervous. Most of our electricity is out. But, we have some outlets working. So, we put the refrigerator on the working outlet, and are able to post on-line for now.
Our family all seems well. One friend was evacuated from her home on Eastern Long Island near the South Shore. But, she has given optimistic reports, otherwise.
Hurricane Sandy: Cat in Window finally sees some excitement: A fallen branch. More like this at: http://onthewilderside.com
Hurricane Sandy has begun her visit to Long Island. Ian and I are stocked up on water and food, and doing okay. (We are north of Sunrise Highway, so not that bad.) We will probably have intermittent blog access, since our electricity flickered two times already, and the wireless went out for a bit.
Democracy Now! Has great coverage of the weather and politics of this Frankenstorm.
A quick video for those who want to hear the wind and rain on Long Island this morning:
Bonus Info: WBAI FM from New York City is one of our favorite radio stations. Here is their update about dealing with and covering Hurricane Sandy from Manhattan…
From: Chris HatzisProgram Director, WBAI 99.5 FM
We are continuing to broadcast from 120 Wall Street. It is a mixture of live broadcasts and already-produced material, along with some off-site regular programming. We will continue to broadcast here at 120 Wall St until the building forces us out. ConEd may take precautions and shut off the power to Lower Manhattan & the whole building, so we have to make contingency plans to leave. We don’t know yet if or when that will happen, but the building management will give us some notice before they decide to do it.
At the present time, people are still being let into the building.
The worst is yet to come storm-wise. High tide this morning has come and gone, water levels have risen but not spilled into the street from the river. The crucial time is this afternoon/evening when high tide arrives again. It is expected to rise above this mornings’ levels, and when it does the building may make the decision to shut off power and evacuate everyone.
If 120 Wall St loses power we will use our stop gap measure: the comrex at Michael G Haskins’ place, where he will run pre-recorded programs along with live updates.
Tony Ryan, Ken Gale, Graceon Challenger and myself are currently here at the studios. We intend to keep broadcasting as much live music/talkback programming as possible. Esther Armah is exhausted after being up all night and has left. Tony Ryan has been here since last night but will be staying. Same for Ken. I have been here since Sunday afternoon. If anyone is willing to come in and assist it would be appreciated. Producers can also call in and give us updates as to what is happening in their neighborhoods.
As always we will keep you posted as to what will take place.
The Newsday article raises the following concerns:
-Originally, Long Island Power Authority/LIPA was supposed to have an elected board. That process has lapsed, which is of concern. And, some of have suggested that changing from elected to appointed may have been an unconstitutional maneuver.
-Even if the process of appointment is okay, Newsday notes, “Four trustees, including [Chairman, Howard] Steinberg, are serving despite their terms having expired.”
-“Steinberg…has served on the LIPA board since Gov. George Pataki appointed him in 1999…”

Ralph Nader speaks out against the presidential debates at Washington University in St. Louis from which he was excluded on Oct 17, 2000. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The candidates* from four political parties –Gary Johnson(Libertarian), Jill Stein (Green), Virgil Goode (Constitution) and Rocky Anderson (Justice) – will meet for a two-hour debate on Sunday, November 4, 7:30 p.m. at Busboys and Poets restaurant located at 2021 14th St NW, Washington, DC 20009. Busboys and Poets is a well-known venue for frequent political, civic and cultural events.

A Presidential Debate for third party candidates will happen tonight, Tuesday, October 23rd. Larry King will moderate.
The venue is Chicago. Though, you can watch on line atFree and Equal, or on Link TV. The debate starts at 9pm EST (here in New York), which is 8pm CDT (where it is being held in Chicago).
Presidential Debate for Monday, October 22nd, which includes ALL the candidates (merge video of Dem and Rep, with third party candidates on Democracy Now!). Starts with Amy Goodman’s debate coverage at 8:30m: www.democracynow.org
This video includes discussion from independent political voices on what is missing from the Commission on Presidential Debates. The video consists of video and photos from the events outside of the Tuesday, October 16, 2012 Debate on Hofstra University Campus, Uniondale, NY. It includes video from the Public Area (Free Speech Area) on ending the wars, global climate change, and single payer health care. Look for Mac Bica and the PO’s Polar Bears. My full speech is re-printed below. I also exposed the mutiny of corporate sponsorship due to the censorship involved in excluding presidential candidates. Footage from the live taping of Democracy Now! during the pre-Debate activities at Hofstra also address the undemocratic nature of the corporately controlled debate. Discussion includes issues that continue not to be discussed from the 2008 debate.
Above: Mike McDermott for Congress at the Hofstra Presidential Debates Hofstra Debate. Mike McDermott is on the ballot, as a Libertarian, for Congress, 3rd District, Long Island, NY. Even though he is ballot-qualified, News12 is excluding him from their debates.
Note: Green Party candidate for President Jill Stein and her running mate, Cheri Honkala were arrested for trying to participate in the debates. Though, they are presently out of jail. (And, the publicity must be good, because I think that their site is down/overloaded at 7:24pm)
Above: Ian Wilder spoke about the “closed debates” and the Jill Stein campaign at the Public Area at 6:30. Photo is from right after the speech. Read more »
There were so many fascinating, wonderful, First Amendment moments happening outside of the debate.
I saw our peace and justice friends calling for a better world.
I missed witnessing Green Party President candidate Jill Stein be arrested for trying to get into the debate. (Stein and Honkala were released the next day. One of the Stein campaign press releases is at the bottom of this post.) Read more »
Greens: Karen Young, Kimberly Wilder, Matt from Nassau, Betty from NYC at Hofstra 10/15/08
Ian Wilder writes: I’m speaking for the Green Party at 6:30, between 2 occupy speakers. I feel right at home. :)
You can find the information on the Public Speakers Area on the Hofstra website. Hofstra University has designated the Hagedorn Hall outside area and parking lot, at the corner of Uniondale Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike as a Public Area. The public will be speaking from 3pm to 930pm.
Our peace indicator, PAXi, jumped to a new high today.
Previously, the high was 337, reached on September 11, 2012. Yesterday (Friday), the PAXi was at 197.
Today, Saturday, October 13th, the PAXi number is 754!
Hopefully, that reflects the level of discussion about peace and nonviolence in the United States. (The subject that PAXi attempts to measure and reflect.)
Mike McDermott is on the ballot, as a Libertarian, for Congress, 3rd District, Long Island, NY. Even though he is ballot-qualified, News12 is excluding him from their debates.
The e-mail excerpted below is from a Libertarian-minded, occupy friend. Please help if you believe in ballot access. Letters-to-the-editor might be useful. And, an e-mail for News12 is: news12li AT news12 DOT com
Our friend told us that Pat Dolan of News12 is the decision-maker on this. So, it might be useful to contact Pat Dolan, as well. (Pat Dolan was also the decision-maker who kept me from debating as a Green Party candidate a few years back.)
