Youth Organizing Internship
WRL National Office, New York City

The Not Your Soldier Project is looking for a New York City based fall intern. We organize to shut down the military invasion of our schools, our communities and our future. We are committed to creating positive alternatives to militarism. We believe that young people can and will stop war abroad and the war at home by ending military recruitment and the poverty draft.

The Not Your Soldier Project focuses on five core issues that form the backbone of the Poverty Draft: ASVAB (Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery), Alternatives to Military, No Child Left Behind, School Visits by Recruiters, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). These issues are clear, systematic ways that the military gains access to low income youth on a regular basis.

The Not Your Soldier Project is staffed in partnership between War Resisters League and The Ruckus Society. We are guided by an advisory board made up of youth, adults, and veterans from across the US and Puerto Rico who are organizing to stop military recruitment in our schools and communities. Not Your Soldier works with both national and local partner organizations.

We provide support to local groups who are campaigning to stop the Poverty Draft- from local networking sessions, to developing a campaign strategy, to days of action, and hosting skill-building camps for youth. Each local campaign is tailored to fit, since the reality of recruitment is different from community to community. But all Not Your Soldier partner organizations share a perspective that the youth most heavily targeted by military recruiters should guide the direction, activities, and tone of the campaign.

Interns will work 20 hours a week on our counter military recruitment organizing projects, administrative and office tasks, special events, and training. Applicants with experience in youth organizing, popular education/training, and campaign work are especially encouraged to apply. There is a stipend provided.

Arrangements for room and board are possible for those who could not participate otherwise. College credit can be arranged. There is an office cat.

We are currently taking applications for our Fall 2007 Freeman Internship Program, which runs September 17th to December 15th, although the dates are flexible. The deadline for applications is Friday, September 7th, 2007.

Please send a cover letter and resume to: Steve Theberge Organizing Coordinator War Resisters League 339 Lafayette St New York, NY 10012 or email to: steve@warresisters.org with Freeman Internship in the subject line The War Resisters League is actively committed to seeking the full representation and participation of people of color, women, lesbians, bisexuals and gay men, and people with disabilities (the office is not wheelchair accessible), as well as people representing various ages, classes, and cultural backgrounds. Such diversity is sought throughout WRL’s staff and decision-making bodies.

The War Resisters League affirms that all war is a crime against humanity. We therefore are determined not to support any kind of war, international or civil, and to strive nonviolently for the removal of the causes of war, including racism, sexism, and all forms of human exploitation.
