The album includes songs on both ends of the spectrum, such as Insatiable about never-ending war and “Don’t Talk” which praises making love as a needed form of marital communication.

Fracking linked to earthquakes

Earthquakes are evidently enough to shake people up. “Fracking” is trending on Yahoo. Below is the current news, and some previous onthewilderside warnings that hydraulic fracturing to find natural gas causes earthquakes. (Also, a video to remind Long Islanders that we can get earthquakes, too.)

(excerpt from) Reuters
Study raises new concern about earthquakes and fracking fluids
July 11, 2013

(Reuters) – Powerful earthquakes thousands of miles (km) away can trigger swarms of minor quakes near wastewater-injection wells like those used in oil and gas recovery, scientists reported on Thursday, sometimes followed months later by quakes big enough to destroy buildings.

The discovery, published in the journal Science by one of the world’s leading seismology labs, threatens to make hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” which involves injecting fluid deep underground, even more controversial.

It comes as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducts a study of the effects of fracking, particularly the disposal of wastewater, which could form the basis of new regulations on oil and gas drilling.

Geologists have known for 50 years that injecting fluid underground can increase pressure on seismic faults and make them more likely to slip. The result is an “induced” quake…

Now seismologists at Columbia University say they have identified three quakes – in Oklahoma, Colorado and Texas – that were triggered at injection-well sites by major earthquakes a long distance away…

Art Sites Gallery Installation, Riverhead, NY 6/8/13-8/18/13

art sites summer of love found and lostWe kept noticing an interesting sign on Main Street in Riverhead that reads “art + architecture”  We finally managed to stop in and check it out. And what a delight!  Inside the building is an art gallery and an architect office.  We spoke for a while with Glynis Berry, a LEED Certified architect.  She explained that in addition to the Art Sites Gallery, they have started a non-profit,  Peconic Green Growth which is working on researching hard data about Eastern Long Island water quality.

The art exhibit and installation we experienced is called “summer of love: found & lost.” It is a project – indoors and out – organized by hope sandrow as part of her series, on the road (2006-)”  It runs from June 8 – August 18, 2013.   The gallery hours are Thursday – Sunday 12-5.  They are located at 651 W. Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901.

Green Party NYS: Cuomo’s Moreland Commission Doesn’t Target Political Corruption

Cuomo’s Fundraising Needs to be Principal Target of Probe

Only Green Party candidates Refuse Corporate Donations The Green Party of New York State criticized New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo today for his flawed efforts to reduce public corruption in New York State by establishing the Moreland Commission.  The Green Party noted that not one of the commissioners appointed to investigate and recommend reforms has ever advocated the “Clean Money” system of full public financing, which the Green Party advocates. In the Clean Money states of Arizona and Maine, candidates qualify for equal public campaign grants by raising a reasonable number of $5 contributions from voters in their district to demonstrate support. The grant is sufficient to get the candidate’s message to all voters. Candidates who opt for public money may not raise and spend private money. They only use clean public money.

The Green Party said it was doubtful that the Moreland Commission would do much to prosecute elected officials for corruption, despite the tidal wave of cases against state legislators in the last decade brought by US Attorneys, not county DA’s. The Commission is just another bully pulpit for the Governor to talk but not act on ethics and campaign finance reform in the state legislature, something he was not up to the task of pushing through during his first three years in office.   Read more »

Center Island Pharmacy in Hampton Bays is closing…

Good-bye notes: Center Island Pharmacy

Center Island Pharmacy in Hampton Bays is a treasure I found just a few months ago. I had been looking for greeting cards at a florist, and the owner sent me over to Center Island. I have loved the place ever since.

Photos at Flickr: here.

Today, I learned that it will be closing (after about 40 years) . I heard various conversations and rumors all around. I think the owner is retiring. And, Center Island Pharmacy will close in about 2 or 3 weeks.
