April Fools: Occupy Wall Street endorses Ron Paul for President

[This post was put up for April Fools Day 2012. It was in the spirit of fun of the same post, put up as an April 1st joke announcement, on the NYCGA/OWS website. At their website, when you clicked on the minutes link for “proof”, it took you to a calendar, reminding you that it was April 1st!]

Picture on front of OWS/NYCGA website

NYCGA.net is an official website of Occupy Wall Street. It is the site for the New York City General Assembly, who make decisions on the ground for Occupy Wall Street.

The NYCGA website today has an announcement that OWS has agreed to officially endorse a Ron Paul presidential ticket.

Well, the endorsement comes with a condition. The website added “If Paul wins the nomination he can carry the OWS endorsement only if Dr. Cornel West is accepted as Vice President.” Read more »

Zimmerman’s community has never ” registered with USAonWatch®-Neighborhood Watch program”

[blackbirdpie url=”https://twitter.com/#!/USAonWatch/status/185122227761577987″]

The defenders of George Zimmerman’s murder of Trayvon Martin depend on the concept that Zimmerman was acting under the so-called color of authority of being a “neighborhood watch captain.”  There is no evidence to suggest or support that Zimmerman was actually connected to any kind of community watch group.

The media should not mention that Zimmerman had the title of being a “neighborhood watch captain” without any attribution.  No one has mentioned anywhere how he came to be member of this watch group, or any action any supposed group took after the murder. (It is also interesting to note that there is no suggestion that  the gated community where Martin lives took any action against Zimmerman for roving their streets as an armed stalker.)

We did some digging and found no support for the Neighborhood watch claim.  The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) registers Neighborhood Watch programs and they have no listings of groups in Zimmerman’s community.  Their statement on this is below (And their tweet in support of Martin’s family is above.)  The NSA statement stresses that Neighborhood Watch is “is only to serve as the eyes and ears of law enforcement. . . .  At no time, do we advocate any intervention actions by any watch group or individual.”

Zimmerman was not under any color of authority.  Nor was Zimmerman some Clint Eastwood style vigilante.  Martin had committed no crimes.  Zimmerman acted only as an armed stalker, a thug, a terrorist.  Read more »

Earth Day movie: Mindwalk

During this month of Earth Day, we wanted to share with you some of the movies, music, and books that have inspired our environmental activism.

Mindwalk.  This movie is a favorite of Ian’s.  It is based on the book Turning Point by physicist Fritjof Capra.  Capra is best know for his book, The Tao of Physics which removes the artificial barriers between religious understanding and scientific understanding.  The book, The Turning Point, presented the movie maker’s problem of how to turn a book about the complexity of our ecological problems into a narrative.  The solution was to set it in a beautiful place,  Mont. St. Michael, France.  And set in motion a discussion between a physicist (Liv Ullmann) and poet (John Heard), and a former presidential candidate  (Sam Waterston) as they walk through Mont. St. Michael.  The narrative form also provided a solution to a lesser problem.  There was already a very famous ballet movie called Turning Point, so the Capra’s movie was named Mindwalk to avoid confusion and reflect the new form.

Health care ruling won’t deliver reform Americans need, says Green Party Prez cand Stein

Jill SteinDr. Jill Stein , the front running Green Party presidential candidate, said today that whatever the U.S. Supreme Court decides on the constitutionality of the insurance mandate of “Obama / Romney care“, Americans will still be stuck with an expensive, ineffective health care system that fails to provide quality health care to all Americans.

Stein, a graduate of Harvard Medical School,  stated:

As a medical doctor trying to care for people in an increasingly broken system over 25 years, I know that a single payer Medicare for All program is the real solution to the American health care crisis. President Obama repeatedly admitted this during the health care debate while insisting that single payer was off the table.

Stein added that it is a well-established fact that our complicated health insurance system increases health expenditures by $400 billion annually, saying that,

The mandate that every American buy expensive, inadequate health insurance is a scheme developed by Republicans and foisted on the nation by Democrats. The winners are the health insurance companies. A Stein administration will make health care a right while eliminating the enormous waste, bureaucracy and negative health impacts of the current health insurance mess.

Dr. Stein campaigned for single payer health care she ran against Mitt Romney for governor of Massachusetts in 2002.  Read more »

Can the US military come disappear you? Yes! Unless you stop the NDAA

See info below: Court case, press conference, and silent march today in NYC to stop the NDAA

I don’t think most Americans realize the extent that recent government decisions and laws have affected their basic freedom and safety. In particular, language inserted into the National Defense Authorization Act allows for anyone labeled a terrorist to be secreted away by the military. That means if the government mixes you up with someone, or targets you because of politics, you can suddenly find yourself in another country, being tortured, when you never saw a judge or had a chance to sort things out. Yes. Yes. Yes. The US government has given itself that power. (And, some people did not even notice.)

Journalist Chris Hedges, and a lot of other high-profile thinkers and journalists noticed. And, they are filing a lawsuit that is one hope to take back our freedom and safety as American citizens.

Today, Thursday, March 29th

Morning: Court for Hedges v. Obama lawsuit about NDAA

War-free Wednesdays photos

Occupy Babylon and local peace activists have instituted War-free Wednesdays.  They honor it by standing vigil at local train stations during morning rush hour to end current US wars and stop future US wars.  The response has been positive.  And educational.  One passerby this morning commented that there is no need to worry about the current President starting a war.  We reminded him of the war in Libya.  And the expanded operation in Afghanistan Pakistan, and Yemen.

Why Geraldo and the 1% don’t need hoodies…

Five Reasons The 99% Wear Hoodies
(and Geraldo Rivera and The 1% Don’t)

A man wears a hoodie at an Occupy The Hamptons GA

1. Hoodies cover a person’s head, and thus are an efficient way to stay warm. (I wonder how many mothers are angry at Geraldo Rivera for contradicting years of nagging to “Put your hood up!”?)

Rich people do not need to wear hoodies. The 1% can easily keep warm by turning the heat up in their homes, or wearing fur coats or lots of layers. S0, rich people do not need to own simple, frugal methods of staying warm.

2. Hoodies are a convenient way to put a hat on or off when one must go inside and outside frequently. So, hoodies are good for people who labor and do real work, such as construction jobs, deliveries, etc. Read more »

Video: OWS Activist Cecily McMillan Describes Seizure, Bodily Injuries in Arrest by NYPD

Occupy Wall Street activist Cecily McMillan suffered a seizure when New York City police officers pulled her from the crowd and arrested her as hundreds attempted to re-occupy Zuccotti Park  Liberty Plaza on Saturday, to mark sixth months since the launch of the movement.

In her first television interview since her arrest, McMillan says she has decided to speak out because of an outpouring of public support.  “I have received so many emails, Twitter messages and phone calls. People are just horrified about what happened to me.”

McMillan has a black eye and her body is covered in bruises, at least one in the shape of a handprint. She says she was not allowed to contact an attorney while she was taken to the hospital and transferred to a jail cell along with some of the 72 other detained protesters.

Facing charges of police assault and obstructing governmental administration, she was released Monday after a judge denied a request that her bail be set at $20,000. McMillan is northeast regional organizer for Young Democratic Socialists of America, and a graduate student at the New School for Social Research. We’re also joined by Meghan Maurus, McMillan’s attorney and mass defense coordinator at the New York City chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

Colia Clark Wins Green Party NY Nomination for US Senate

Anti-War Candidate calls for Green Jobs, Hydrofracking Ban, Foreclosure Halt

Colia ClarkColia Clark won the unanimous vote of the Green Party State Committee to run for US Senate at a meeting held in Manhattan. Clark, a long time civil rights, peace and women activist, was a Green Party nominee for U.S. Senate in 2010 (http://www.coliaclark.org/) for the seat presently held by Chuck Schumer.

Clark, a resident of Manhattan, is a chair of Grandmothers for the Release of Mumia Abu Jamal. During the Civil Rights era, Clark was a Special Assistant to Medgar W. Evers, field Secretary for the NAACP. Clark later joined the Mississippi Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) doing voter registration work. She was the founder and Coordinator for Poor Women Against Vietnam War, and the former coordinator of the Social Justice Center in Albany.

Announcement of Candidacy of Colia L. Clark for the United States Senate from New York State

I am pleased to announce my candidacy for US Senate from the great State of New York on the Green Party ticket. These are troubling times for our State and Nation. The American people are faced with wars on many levels: the economy; environment; health care systems; organized labor in both public and private sectors; increased levels of poverty, genetic modified foods which threaten the health of citizens and food production systems’, increased pressure to dismantle large sectors of the public education system and numerous assaults on planet earth in the quest for energy. These aforementioned internal crises and disasters are matched by our government’s steady march toward a great world war.  Read more »
