Let Freedom Spring!
NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly must resign!

The 1%’s police proxies have been attempting to suppress our peaceful protests, sparking a response we haven’t seen since last September.

But we need your help! Our best defense is a strong offense, and mass turnout at this time will protect our movement as the action-packed ‘American Spring’ bursts into the streets.

Join us this Saturday at 12pm in Liberty Square and call for NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly’s resignation.

March with us to our newest location at #OccupyUnionSq in solidarity with the communities across New York City who have long felt the wrath of Mayor Bloomberg’s “private army”.

NYCLU Sues Nassau County to Establish Jail Oversight Board

This news is posted in remembrance of a local treasure, Susan Blake, who was protesting the conditions at the Nassau Jail before anyone was paying attention.  Susan, you are missed.

Following the recent suicide of an Iraq war veteran housed at the Nassau County Correctional Center – the fifth inmate suicide in less than two years – the New York Civil Liberties Union  filed a lawsuit to compel county officials to comply with a 22-year-old unfulfilled charter mandate to establish an independent board charged with overseeing and reforming conditions at the jail.

Samantha Fredrickson, director of the NYCLU’s Nassau County Chapter  said:

Tragically, a stay at the Nassau County Jail can become a death sentence for the 11,000 people a year who are housed there awaiting trial or serving time for minor offenses. Since Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano has turned a blind eye to this disturbing reality, we have no choice but to ask the court to compel the county to take this initial step toward finally treating people housed at the jail with basic human dignity.

Green Party seeks abolition of Prison Nation and Police State abuses in the US

Greens promote sane justice system and security policies, including a halt to the War on Drugs and constitutional violations

Darryl! Moch

Darryl! Moch

As more and more Americans express alarm at the curtailment of rights and privacy and the increasing numbers of citizens locked up in prison, Green Party candidates and leaders are calling for rational security, law enforcement, and justice system policies.

“The US cannot be called a ‘free country’ as long as Prison Nation and Police State abuses are allowed to continue,” said Darryl! Moch, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. “The War on Drugs, privatized prisons, and other outrages have led to America’s record-high incarceration rate, with the proportionally highest prison population in the world. Racial disparities in arrests and sentencing have devastated black and brown communities. Instead of providing safety and civic peace, these policies have eroded our freedoms, safety, and the rule of law.”

Greens pointed to bipartisan landmarks in the growth of the Prison Industrial Complex and erosion of the US Constitution:  Read more »

Last Night: Police rise to new level of abuse and violence against Occupy demonstrators

Two things:

One: I believe that one reason the NYPD was as arrogant and violent as they were last night, is because of new policies and legislation passed by Obama and Congress in the last few weeks. People need to slow down and check out what our entire government – both parties – have been doing to change our rights as citizens and human beings in this country. [See NDAA info here. See HR 347 info: here.]

Two: For people who think they are okay and safe from police abuse because they won’t demonstrate, or get in trouble with the police: You see what the police are doing to these demonstrators? — accidentally shoving, casually breaking glass with their heads, standing by while someone they arrest has a seizure, barricading people in and out of public spaces — that is what they are going to do to you when there is a little commotion on the bread line or the gas line. (And, the bread line and the gas line are coming up for a lot of us. Know anyone who is unemployed? Know anyone who is losing their home?)

I was watching live video of the march last night. I heard someone describe seeing a woman have a seizure while police kept certified medics away. I was not sure if I could believe such an atrocity happened. The story is in the NY Times today. If you read between the lines, you can see the police were slow to act when the woman needed medical attention.

Green Party Slams Cuomo, Lawmakers for Midnight Sellout of New Yorkers

The Green Party of New York blasted Governor Cuomo and state lawmakers for their middle of the night votes to continue gerrymandering of state legislative districts in exchange for passing Cuomo’s assault on the pension benefits of government workers.

The Greens also opposed the deal on casino gambling and the DNA database.

“Cuomo’s push on on Tier VI is just the latest chapter in his game of class warfare, attacking public employees while refusing to close corporate tax loopholes or make his wealthy campaign contributors pay their fair share of taxes. The real bottom line in the pension fight was to slash retirement benefits for the one segment of our society that still is protected by pensions. If he wants to help local governments and taxpayers, he should tax Wall Street to clean up the mess they created,”said Howie Hawkins, Green Party co-chair.  Read more »

NY DNA Databank Expansion Long on Politics, Short on Justice

The leadership of the New York Civil Liberties Union today denounced the State Legislature’s passage of legislation allowing police to collect a genetic sample of every person convicted of any crime in New York State, saying the measure will do little to enhance public safety while increasing the likelihood of wrongful convictions and flawed prosecutions.

NYCLU Legislative Director Robert Perry  said:

The bill isn’t in the service of justice or fairness but rather in the interest of expanding the databank. It will have a negligible impact on enhancing public safety but increase significantly the likelihood for inefficiency error and abuse in the collection and handling of forensic DNA.

Politics drove this debate, not good science or sound public policy analysis. Any forensics expert will tell you that including genetic samples of every person ever convicted of a misdemeanor in the DNA databank won’t lead to more effective law enforcement, but it will almost certainly increase inefficiency, errors and abuse.

1 Year after Fukushima, Prez Cand Stein (G) calls for 100% renewable energy economy

Jill SteinGreen Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein   marked the first anniversary of the Fukushima meltdown, and the resultant deaths and estimated $250 billion in cleanup costs, by calling for a Green New Deal to begin an immediate move to a 100% renewable energy economy. Dr. Stein said the Obama White House “has shown it has learned nothing” by promoting nuclear power plants at a time when much of the world is shifting away from them after the Japanese nuclear disaster.

Stein said:

A Green president would invest in wind, solar and geothermal, emphasize efficiency and conservation, phase out nuclear power plants, and move to a carbon-free economy to deal with climate change. We would immediately end Obama’s expensive subsidies for nuclear power as well as fossil fuels, and use those funds instead to kick off a job-producing energy program based on clean, safe and renewable energy,

Stein said she would push for the immediate shutdown of the 23 Fukushima-style GE Mark I reactors as the first step in moving to a nuclear-free America.  Read more »

Human Color poetry anthology call-out

The Human Colorfrom The Human Color

The Human Color is calling on you to speak out and submit your poetry to its first edition of Heritage, a poetry anthology about issues of race, identity, culture, and humanity.

We are honored to have our first inaugural edition of Heritage be edited by three very talented and prolific poets: Ms. Mahogany BrowneMr. Regie Cabico, and Ms. Karen Jaime.

We are launching Heritage with The Human Color itself as the creative prompt. What is “The Human Color,” and what does it mean to you? What kind of world does it represent and how is this world similar or different to our present? What are some hopeful signs that we are moving toward such a future, or what are some present problems that indicate that such a move is necessary and important? How do notions of race affect the way we view and treat one another, and how can a universal symbol like The Human Color help change it for the better? Please feel free to address some or all of these questions and use them as an inspirational springboard to define The Human Color for yourself and for all of us. Also, please try to avoid using the actual phrase “The Human Color” in your poem.
