Columbus Day weekend adventure: Eastern Long Island

Columbus Day weekend adventure:
Lawn signs, fun, and sunsets

My husband Ian and I took a drive out east on the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend. We had the idea to capture signs of fall for the blog. Among our observations was a study on lawn signs and politics.

The full set of photos is at our Flickr album: here

Reflective comments on Columbus Day and its meaning at a 2009 onthewilderside post: here.

CFPB report on Reverse Mortgages confirms IW Criticisms

English: Sign of the times - Foreclosure

Update: alos see the NY Time:  A Risky Lifeline for the Elderly Is Costing Some Their Homes

IW: In my May 24, 2012 post,  Is there a coming Reverse Mortgage Crisis?, I prescribed the following remedies for the Reverse Mortgage market to avert another financial collapse:

  • Allowing HECM housing counselors to bring their experience to bear on counseling seniors just as HUD-approved counselors do in other subject areas such as foreclosure, first-time homebuyer, and landlord-tenant.
  • (In a related suggestion) Making first-time home-buyer counseling mandatory in government-backed forward mortgages as it is for reverse mortgages
  • Ban securitization of residential mortgages (reverse and forward)
  • Require banks to hold (not sell-off) a sizable portion of the reverse mortgages they make. There is a similar proposal currently being floated for forward mortgages
  • Require a loan budget be made for reverse mortgages to determine affordability including taxes, insurance and average maintenance costs as is done in forward mortgage underwriting.

On June 28, 2012 the Consumer Financial Protection Board released their Report to Congress on Reverse Mortgages noting similar problems. This is what their press release stated:

Cornel West: Gives a courageous diagnosis. Prescribes leeches.

Cornel West @ Hofstra U 10/3/12Dr. Cornel West courageously explained that both Obama and Romney are corporate candidates funded by Wall Street. He explained how West, himself, could have been assassinated under Obama’s NDAA for supporting Nelson Mandela.  West criticized both candidates equally for not discussing poverty. He criticized Obama’s drones for murdering children.  West’s diagnosis of the positions of both corporate candidates was on point. I am sure it would make both corporate parties uncomfortable.

The problem is that Dr. West’s prescription for healing  these problems would make the corporate left very comfortable.  He lacks the courage he calls for to bust out of conformity. He is going to vote for corporate candidate Obama, and can’t even mention the non-corporate candidates.  That is why I decided it was not worth it to stay for West’s post-debate comments.

West has written off the 1/3 of the voters, and their candidates, that are not part of the corporate Democratic and Republican Parties. As I write this, the Green Party’s presidential candidate Jill Stein and the Justice Party’s Rocky Anderson are expanding the debate on Democracy Now.  The Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson is suing to get into the debates.  The most disappointing moment of the Cornel West event was when a member of the Hofstra University Libertarian Club go to the microphone to ask a question and failed to mention that Gary Johnson should be in the debate.

Cornel West @ Hofstra U 10/3/12Speaking of the Q&A section, West’s description of Plato could be applied to himself.  A questioner compared the attack on Occupy to Plato’s allegory of the cave.  West said he agreed with Plato’s criticism of the excesses of democracy, but disagreed with his analysis that an oligarchy is better than democracy.  The same syllogism could be applied to West.  He is right in his criticism of the corporate party candidates. But, then his analysis of only choosing from among the corporate oligarchy candidates is as flawed as Plato’s analyses of democracy.  Cornel West is like a brilliant doctor, who figures out the correct sickness, and then applies leeches.

Dr. West gave the  example after example of the righteousness of backing the social justice underdogs from Jesus to the Abolitionists to Occupy, yet he cannot see the need to do the same with his vote.  Brother West, please choose peace.  Brother West, please vote your values. Brother West, please choose love.

Cornel West at Hofstra: Pre-debate lecture

Cornel West @ Hofstra U 10/3/12

Presidential Debates create a flurry of discussion, networking, and socializing.

The corporate party debate is being held in Colorado tonight. (The activists in Colorado will be occupying the debate!)

In the internet universe, activists, independents, and third party supporters will be watching the debate on Democracy Now!, where third party candidates will have a chance to respond.

On Long Island, the cool place to be is at Hofstra University, where Dr. Cornel West is giving a lecture. And, afterwards, the debate will be live streamed to the audience there.

Ian Wilder of onthewilderside is on the ground at Hofstra. His wrap-up report with photos is: here.

Chris Hedges on Prez 2012: How Do You Take Your Poison?

(excerpt from) Truth Dig
How Do You Take Your Poison?
By Chris Hedges / Spet 24, 2012

We will all swallow our cup of corporate poison. We can take it from nurse Romney, who will tell us not to whine and play the victim, or we can take it from nurse Obama, who will assure us that this hurts him even more than it hurts us, but one way or another the corporate hemlock will be shoved down our throats. The choice before us is how it will be administered. Corporate power, no matter who is running the ward after January 2013, is poised to carry out U.S. history’s most savage assault against the poor and the working class, not to mention the Earth’s ecosystem. And no one in power, no matter what the bedside manner, has any intention or ability to stop it.

If you insist on participating in the cash-drenched charade of a two-party democratic election at least be clear about what you are doing. You are, by playing your assigned role as the Democratic or Republican voter in this political theater, giving legitimacy to a corporate agenda that means your own impoverishment and disempowerment…

Companies drop sponsorship of 2012 Presidential debates

The Libertarian candidate for President has filed papers asserting that his exclusion from the debates violates The Sherman Antitrust Act. If the debate criteria were narrowed down to candidates who had a technical chance of winning, both Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein should be on stage. In the wake of Johnson’s lawsuit and pressure from nonprofits, some companies have withdrawn their support of the 2012 Presidential debates. (For ways you can help, see bottom of this post.)

Philips pulls presidential debate sponsorship
by Dylan Byers 9/30/2012

Philips Electronics has dropped its sponsorship of the 2012 presidential debates, citing a desire not to associate itself with “partisan politics,” POLITICO has learned.

Philips is the third and by far the largest of the original ten sponsors to pull its support, following similar decisions by British advertising firm BBH New York and the YWCA over the last week… Read more »

Another police killing: What if there were no police?

The latest police failure is the story of a police officer in Houston, Texas, who shot and killed a man, who was a double-amputee, who was in his wheelchair. [Story at CNN: here] The man had been threatening the officer with what turned out to be a pen. Below is my essay, previously published at Dissident Voice, about how to better police our communities. -KW

What If There Were No Police?
Moving past the failed institution of “the police”

by Kimberly Wilder

_____________________________________________

The idea of “The Police” is not working for America.

Americans have a belief that the police are helping to keep people safe and helping to limit or stop crime.

Though, in recent decades, there have been too many mistakes, where police have harmed innocent people. And many times, the police have even killed innocent and/or unarmed people.

Some examples of serious police failures include: Read more »

Three Mile Island nuclear plant: bang, shut down, and steam released

Nuclear Power incident at Three Mile Island last week. I can’t believe how little this serious concern has been covered in the press. I first got word of it through an activist news source. If you search for it on Google New, hardly anything comes up. Though, there is this CNN story which just totally tones down the importance of the situation:

Pump Triggers 3 Mile Island Shutdown, NRC says

That headline does everything it can to dismiss the incident. It starts off with a mechanical part. So, the science may bore people. It does not say nuclear. It focuses on shutting down, so that you think that a safety response worked, and you think that it is “over”.

Compare that to the more pertinent, accurate headline from an activist news source CLG News:

Three Mile Island nuclear plant shuts down unexpectedly, releasing radioactive steam

A summary of the incident from CLG News… Read more »
