Green presidential candidate Jill Stein and VP candidate Cheri Honkala address Occupy Rally

The Green Party of the United States saluted and praised Occupy Wall Street on September 17, the latter’s first anniversary, calling the movement a sorely needed revival of protest for the economic rights of working people and the poor in an era of increasing redistribution of wealth to the top “one percent” supported by both Democratic and Republican politicians.

Many Greens Party members, including Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein and VP Cheri Honkala, have joined the Occupy Wall Street rally in New York. On Monday, September 17, Dr. Stein and Ms. Honkala spoke to the rally at Bowling Green, with Dr. Stein addressing the connection between climate change and big banks (http://www.jillstein.org/occupy_wall_street_anniversary). Which Presidential Candidate Picketed with the Chicago Teachers Union?

Green Party Presidential candidate Jill SteinJill Stein joins Chicago strike for public education

Earlier today, Green Party Presidential candidate Jill Stein joined the picket lines at Amundsen and Lane Tech, two Chicago high schools. On her way from Ohio, she cancelled her morning appearances in Minnesota in order to visit Chicago teachers, parents, and students who have been engaged in a citywide strike since Monday.

The battle the teachers of the Chicago Public Schools are fighting is not one of their choosing. It is one which has been foisted on them by politicians who have been bankrolled by, and who therefore represent the interests of, the 1%.

Rahm Emanuel’s war against the Chicago Teachers Union is not about wages or benefits. It is about the future of quality public education in Chicago and beyond. President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, with their “Race to the Top” initiative, are seeking to destroy the influence of the teachers unions, to reroute public dollars to corporate interests, and to undermine the core fabric of public education in America.  Read more »

Occupy the Debates! Demand fair presidential debates!

Demand fair presidential debates!Spread the word far and wide! This morning, dozens of community leaders, artists, and academics — including Tom Morello, Leah Bolger, Richard Wolff and Medea Benjamin — and thousands more joined together to launch Occupy the CPD.

Please join them at http://www.OccupytheCPD.org

WHY YOU SHOULD SIGN THIS URGENT STATEMENT

The presidential debates are the first opportunity for millions of voters to see the presidential contenders themselves, not just their advertising campaigns. These debates are organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) – a supposedly “nonpartisan” corporation which is a puppet of the national Democratic and Republican parties, and the big corporations that fund both of them. The CPD’s criteria to be included in these debates are designed to exclude independent contenders who promote ideas that challenge those in power.

WE DEMAND DEBATES OF, BY, AND FOR THE PEOPLE . . .
NOT THE CORPORATIONS: Read more »

DN!: Occupy Austin Activists set up for Felony Charges by Police

DemocracyNow.org – As Occupy Wall Street prepares to mark its first anniversary, members of Occupy Austin have discovered that their arrests on felony charges after a protest last December are directly linked to equipment provided by a police detective who infiltrated their group. The activists locked arms inside tubes made of PVC pipe that the police had designed, constructed and dropped off for the protest. We’re joined from Austin by Ronnie Garza, one of the members of Occupy Austin facing felony charges stemming from the December protest; and from Houston by Greg Gladden, National Lawyers Guild member and past president of the Texas American Civil Liberties Union.

Congress cand Nancy Wade (G-IL5) Stands With Chicago Teachers Union

Nancy L. Wade Green Party Candidate for US Congress in the 5th District of IllinoisGreen Party candidate Nancy Wade released the following statement after the Chicago Teachers Union issued a strike starting at Midnight on September 10:

As a longtime teacher and as the Green Party candidate for Illinois‘ 5th U.S. Congressional district, I would like to announce my unequivocal support for the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) in its labor dispute with the Chicago Public Schools.  The scope of the teachers’ demands, which they have clearly articulated, extends beyond salary and job security to offer a comprehensive blueprint for addressing systemic problems such as class size, adequate facilities, and more support staff.  By contrast, rather than negotiating in good faith, Mayor Emanuel, his handpicked school board, and various corporate front groups have continued to scapegoat teachers for the failures of misguided local policies and for chronic city budget woes not created by the teachers.

Green Party remains only party endorsing DC statehood

    The flag of Washington, D.C.

The Green Party remains the only national party with ballot status in DC to endorse statehood

  •  Green presidential candidate Jill Stein: “I strongly support statehood for the District of Columbia”

Leaders and candidates of the DC Statehood Green Party called the omission of an endorsement for DC statehood in the Democratic & Republican Partys’ 2012 national platform a a possible setback for the movement to bring democracy and full citizenship rights to residents of the District of Columbia.

The Green Party remains the only major party in the District to support DC statehood in its national platform: “Enact statehood for the District of Columbia. Ensure that residents of the District of Columbia have the same rights and representation as all other U.S. citizens.” (2012 Green Party Platform,http://www.gp.org/committees/platform/2012/democracy.php#316100).

I strongly support statehood for the District of Columbia, which will afford DC residents self-determination, permanent self-government, and full representation in Congress. DC statehood remains part of the unfinished business of the Civil Rights Movement,” said Jill Stein, 2012 Green Party candidate for President (http://www.jillstein.org).  Read more »
