Event Flyer

Brentwood, NY – On Saturday, April 14, 2007, citizens concerned about the catastrophic effects of global warming will gather at the Solar Cafe for music, discussion and solutions. The event is part of the Step It Up 2007 campaign, the largest day of citizen action focusing on global warming in our nation’s history. Other Step It Up events will be held in New York City, Stony Brook, Riverhead and Bridgehampton.

The Solar Cafe is a solar powered restaurant, dedicated to the promotion and advocacy of renewable and sustainable living. The Solar Cafe is located at 1 First Avenue in Brentwood, on the site of the old Brentwood Railroad Station. The event runs from 1pm to 4pm. Free Admission. Regular cafe menu. www.solarcafeus.com

Included in the activities will be: Music by local R&B artist Ahmad Ali; presentations on global warming and the need for solar, wind and other renewable energy; and a chance to make your own commitment to reduce global warming. The event is co-sponsored by the Solar Cafe and the Babylon Greens.

Step It Up is a nationwide campaign compromised of over 1000 events in 50 states rallying around the need for substantial and rapid action on the issue of global warming. Events have been organized by groups and individuals from all walks of life who agree on one thing: The time has come for our elected officials to take bold and immediate steps to combat global warming.

The Step It Up campaign is promoting a minimum reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 80% by 2050. The Green Party goes even further, to demand 90% by 2020.

“If we don’t act now, scientists tell us we’ll face an entirely different planet. From melting glaciers to unreasonable and erratic weather patterns, we are already feeling the impact of global warming. This is a global crisis that will affect all of us and requires immediate and bold action. But, while global warming presents us with our most pressing challenge, it also presents our most inspiring opportunity,” said the national Step It Up Organizer, Bill McKibben.

These rallies and events are a wake-up call to legislators. Elected officials must see that their constituents view global warming as the greatest threat facing our civilization today, and are pleading for them to step up and take action.

A recent Green Party of the United States press release notes, “The Green Party has called for the U.S. to sign onto the Kyoto accords and to take the lead on a 70% reduction of Co2 emissions [immediately], as well as rapid transition to clean and secure alternative energy sources, energy conservation, reduced reliance on cars, and a phase-out on fossil fuel dependence and nuclear energy. The party advocates restructuring of local, national, and global economies, with investment and creation of new jobs in conservation and conversion to renewable solar and wind power, taxes on fossil fuel consumption, and bans on new drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other wilderness areas.”
