DNot!: “Occupy Everywhere”: May Day on OWS, Immigration, Labor Protests

“Occupy Everywhere”: May Day Special Show on OWS, Immigration, Labor Protests

Democracy Not!, the War and War report again reports on the Corporate War Party candidates attempts to out-do each other in wrapping themselves in Osama bin Laden’s dead body as they ignore the two presidential candidates who support the Occupy/May Day actions.  Green Party presidential hopefuls, Roseanne Barr and Jill Stein, both have been supporters of OWS.  Barr spoke at the first day of Occupy Wall Street.  Roseanne’s May Day press release is below.  Dr. Jill Stein is spoke at May Day events and has been appearing at Occupy events.  Stein’s  May Day statement is below.

As Occupy Wall Street plans nationwide protests marking International Workers’ Day, or May Day, we discuss the movement with Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, Chris Hedges; Amin Husain, editor of Tidal magazine and a key facilitator of the Occupy movement; Marina Sitrin, author of “Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina” and a member of Occupy’s legal working group; and Teresa Gutierrez of the May 1st Coalition for Worker and Immigrant Rights. We also get an update from protests on the streets of New York City from Ryan Devereaux, former Democracy Now! correspondent, now with The Guardian.   Read more »

Another unfair arrest (or two) at 10:40pm at Pearl Street. A protester attacked by police and blood is drawn (as reported by the NYCLU Twitter)

Union Square, just after 6pm

May Day and Occupy events around the country yielded interesting outcomes. A road was closed down at the LA airport. 5 Bank of America branches were closed down in Chicago.  Tear gas was used in Oakland and Seattle. You can find some links and info at occupwallst.org: here.

Occupy Wall Street/May Day in NYC evening update:

At first, news outlets were saying around 3:30pm that there were “hundreds” of demonstrators. Now, most outlets are at least saying “thousands”. I heard a number in passing on an informal activist chat that suggested there were 15,000 people in the Union Square to Wall Street march. Below are some evening live blog updates, including a crowd estimate, as published by OccupyWallSt.org

Occupy May Day: Tuesday morning updates

At 4:54pm: You can watch the stage at Union Square at OccupyMusician: here.

At 2pm, you can see Live Streaming from Occupy Guitarmy at Timstream: here.

I think the police are bothering folks a bit in NYC this afternoon. I think people are rethinking or canceling a “Wildcat Strike”, but I am not clear on the details. If you are on the ground, stay alert!

Live-blogging at OccupyWallSt.org says that as of 9:15am EST “The rain has stopped in NYC.” (Good news for Guitarmy!)

Urban Uprisings from Paris Commune to #OWS

Ahead of May Day, David Harvey Details Urban Uprisings from Occupy Wall Street to the Paris Commune

Democracy Now! should be called Democracy Not!.  They featured an academic talking about urban uprisings while ignoring history in the making.  Two women who have deep ties to the Occupy movement, Roseanne Barr and Dr. Jill Stein, are vying for the Green Party nomination for President.  You would never know that by watching Democracy Not!  Barr spoke at the first day of Occupy Wall Street, and Stein has been a fixture at Occupy events across the country.   Instead of covering them, Democracy Not! spent precious news minutes regurgitating the same White House Correspondent’s Dinner story about the corporatists Obama and Romney that all the corporate media has slavishly covered.

May Day: March for Immigrant Rights in Hempstead, LI, NY

KW writes: If you cannot get to the city for one of Occupy May Day events on Tuesday, May 1st, this march may be a good place to go to be among like minds. I, personally, disagree with some of the specific bills and proposals that some folks have listed as part of the message. Though, I can agree with the spirit of justice and tolerance for immigrants, and I think it would be good to march with signs and thoughts of “peace” and “Occupy May Day”.

So, consider gathering at 3:30 in Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, New York for this May Day event, with the march kickoff at 4:oopm.

Some info in English and Spanish below:

NYPD Arrests NYCLU Legal Observer at Occupy Wall Street event

KW writes: The police must learn to change. The police must learn to respect people who are protesting. And, police departments should learn to fire police officers who are caught doing wrong. In addition, the public should have easy ways to recall politicians like Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who allow bad cops to continue harassing people, and thus deprive us of our human rights and our Constitutional Rights.

Green Party prepares for the ‘Occupy May Day’ General Strike

99% An Occupy Wall Street themeGreen Party candidates and activists will participate in the May 1 General Strike organized by the Occupy Movement and the May 1 Coalition and will join thousands of union members, students, immigrants, and others across the US in the first national strike in the nation’s history, with simultaneous strikes in other countries.

Rallies, marches, and picket lines are planned for over 115 cities to assert the rights of working people and democracy, in the face of growing power of financial elites over government and the lives of the “99 percent” and the threat this represents to the future of the US.

“The Occupy Movement is nonpartisan and is not affiliated with any political party, including the Green Party. But the presence of Green Party members  in Occupy protests, including the May Day strike, is a reminder that the demands of the Occupy Movement will be represented on the ballot on Election Day. They won’t be represented by the Wall Street candidates — Republicans and Democrats — but by Green candidates, who accept no money from corporate PACs,” said Ursula Rozum, peace activist and organizer in Syracuse, NY, and Green Party candidate for Congress in New York’s 24th Congressional district (http://www.ursulaforcongress.com).

The Green Party has had an active and sustained presence in the Occupy Movement, with Greens among the movement’s leadership. Green Party presidential candidates Jill Stein (http://www.jillstein.org) and Roseanne Barr (http://www.roseanneforpresident.com) have spoken at Occupy rallies.

Green candidates running for office at every level, from city council to Congress and the White House, are basing their campaigns on the Green New Deal (http://www.greenpartywatch.org/2010/08/11/62-green-candidates-endorse-green-new-deal) and calling for the following:  Read more »

Prez cand Stein (G) would pardon Bradley Manning

Dr. Jill Stein released a video statement today in support of Pfc. Bradley Manning, in coordination with today’s Occupy the Justice Department actions:

“My name is Jill Stein and I’m running with the Green Party for President of the United States. If elected,  I will immediately pardon Bradley Manning,  the U.S. Army soldier accused of leaking classified material to the whistleblower website, WikiLeaks, while working as an intelligence analyst near Baghdad.

Many people know some of the highlights among the 3 million pages of leaked cables. Probably the most well-know is the horrifying so-called “Collateral Murder” video of the Apache helicopter attack on Reuters journalists and then on the civilians, including the children in that van, who tried to take the wounded away for treatment.

Another revelation concerned a military night raid that killed six children, followed by a U.S. air strike to destroy the evidence and cover up the atrocity.

The overall impact of the leaked information has been huge, leading indirectly to the recent withdrawal of the U.S. military from Iraq much sooner than our government intended. That’s because these revelations compelled the Maliki government in Iraq to refuse to extend criminal immunity to U.S. soldiers. It contributed to the turn of American public opinion to overwhelmingly oppose the war in Afghanistan. And it added momentum to the Arab Spring uprisings against dictatorial U.S.-backed regimes.  Read more »
